Frequently asked questions
What Soma is, who it's for, what happens to your data and when you can try it.
Soma Axon
What is Soma?
It's a whole-body scan you step into once a week. Soma Axon is a closed pod that reads your skin, heart, breathing, body composition, balance and strength the same way at every visit. Between visits, the Soma app keeps reading from your phone and watch.
What does the pod measure?
Your skin, heart and breathing, body composition, balance and strength. Cameras photograph your skin, while thermal imaging, EEG, ECG, a floor plate and a pair of grips take the other readings, all in one visit. Every value comes with its margin of error.
Does the pod photograph my skin?
Yes, at every visit. You turn a quarter at a time so the cameras see your skin all the way around, and the app compares each spot with how it looked in earlier weeks. Soma won't tell you whether a mole is harmful. If a spot keeps changing, the app points you to a clinician.
Can I add a blood test?
Yes, as an option. At pods with an attendant, they take a few drops from your fingertip and send them to a partner lab, and the results reach the app a few days later. Where a state doesn't allow that, you get a kit to use at home instead.
Is it like a full-body MRI or CT scan?
No. The pod uses no X-rays, no CT and nothing else ionizing. It reads you with cameras, light and sensors you touch. It isn't an MRI either, and it doesn't take images of your organs. Full-body scans, compared sets the kinds side by side.
How long does a visit take?
About as long as it takes to get a coffee. You stand still for a few minutes while the pod takes its reading, turning a quarter at a time for the skin photos, then the recovery part follows.
Why every week?
One reading on its own doesn't tell you much. Taken the same way every week, readings show what's changing and how fast. That's 52 whole-body reads a year, where a yearly check-up gives you one.
How is it different from a smart ring or a watch?
A ring or a watch reads a few signals all day, like your pulse, sleep and steps. Soma Axon reads your whole body once a week: skin, heart and breathing, body composition, balance and strength, the same way every time. They work together, since the Soma app reads your phone and watch between visits. How Soma compares goes product by product.
What do I wear?
Your underwear. You change in a private room, and if you'd rather, we'll give you a fitted garment to wear, though the skin it covers won't be photographed. There's no cuff, and no needle unless you add the blood test.
What's the recovery part for?
It's there to help you feel good. After the reading come warmth, cool air and mist, light, sound and a slow breath. It doesn't treat anything, and you can make any part of it gentler.
Is it for me?
Is Soma medical care?
No. Soma is a general wellness product. It isn't a medical device, and it isn't cleared or approved by the FDA. It isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. The Terms of Use say so in full.
Who can use Soma?
Adults 18 and over, in the United States, who can stand still for a few minutes. Making the pod work for people who can't stand is on our roadmap.
Who shouldn't use it yet?
The first version of Soma Axon isn't for you if you're pregnant or under 18. It also isn't for you if you have a pacemaker, an implanted defibrillator or another implanted electronic device. The pod reads body composition with a very small electrical current, and the recovery part uses heat and cold. If you're unsure, ask your doctor before your first visit.
Does it replace my doctor or my yearly check-up?
No. Keep seeing your doctor and keep your check-ups. Soma adds a weekly reading in the months between them.
What happens if something looks off?
Soma won't guess at a diagnosis. If a value keeps looking unusual, or a spot on your skin keeps changing, the app tells you plainly and points you to a clinician. In an emergency, call 911.
Results and the app
What do I get after a visit?
The pod shows you one calm number on your way out. Everything else is in the Soma app, explained in plain words, with the margin of error for each value. If you added the blood test, its results follow a few days later.
What does the app do between visits?
It keeps reading. Your phone and watch already measure you all day, and the app shows that back to you on three screens: Today, Body and Mind.
Which phone do I need?
An iPhone, since the app reads Apple Health. A watch is optional. If you wear one, the app gets more detail about the days between visits.
How sure are the numbers?
Every value comes with its margin of error, and says whether the science behind it is well established or still being tested. If something wasn't measured, that spot stays empty. You won't see a guess in its place, and every score shows the measures that moved it.
Your data
What happens to my data?
It stays yours. We don't sell it or use it for ads, and you can ask us to delete it at any time, from the pod and the app. Staff never see the photos of your skin. They see an outline of your body instead. The Privacy Policy has the details.
Can I delete everything?
Yes. Email privacy@somalabs.me and we'll remove your data from our live systems within 30 days, and from our backups within 90.
When and where
When can I try it?
Not yet. We're building the first prototype of Soma Axon now. Join the waitlist to hear when the first pod opens and when the app is ready for you.
Where will the pods be?
In our own studio, and in longevity clinics, gyms, workplaces and pharmacies. One account works at every pod. People on the waitlist will be the first to hear where the first pod opens.
How much will it cost?
Soma is meant to be a weekly habit, and we'll price it like one. We'll share prices before the first pod opens, and the waitlist will hear them first. The blood test will be an add-on with its own price.
How do I get early access?
Leave your email on the waitlist. You'll be among the first to hear when the pod opens and the app is ready.
