Medical care and the FDA
Why Soma is a general wellness product, and what that means beside your doctor.
Is Soma medical care?
No. Soma is a general wellness product, and Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company behind it, says so in its FAQ. It isn't a medical device, and it isn't cleared or approved by the FDA. It isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Soma Axon, the weekly pod it's building, is meant to show how your readings change from one week to the next, and it isn't available yet.
From FAQ, About, Full-body scans compared and Compare.
Can a weekly body scan replace my annual physical?
It shouldn't, according to the company building one. Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, tells people to keep seeing their doctor and keep their check-ups, and it describes Soma as a general wellness product. Its view is that a yearly check-up is thorough but a year is a long gap, so its Soma Axon pod adds a weekly reading in the months between. The pod is still being built, and the waitlist will hear first when it opens.
From FAQ, About, The same instrument, every week and Compare.
Is Soma built for medical use or for wellness?
For wellness. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) says so on its home page and calls itself a wellness tool on its blog. Its FAQ spells out what that means: Soma is a general wellness product, and it isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. What it's built for is the trend, with the same readings taken the same way every week so you can see how your body changes between check-ups. Soma Axon, the pod behind it, is still a prototype.
From Home, The same instrument, every week, FAQ, Compare and About.
Does Soma Axon measure eye pressure?
No. Soma Axon won't measure eye pressure, and it won't image your organs either. The pod reads your skin, heart and breathing, body composition, balance and strength. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building it, describes it as a general wellness product, and it's still a prototype with a waitlist for the first pod.
From Blog, Full-body scans compared, FAQ, About and Compare.
Is Soma Axon like a full-body MRI that looks at my organs?
No. A whole-body MRI takes images of your organs and tissue using a magnetic field and radio waves. Soma Axon isn't an MRI, and it doesn't take images of your organs. It reads you with cameras, light and sensors you touch. Soma calls it a general wellness product and is building it to show change over time. The first prototype is still in the works.
From Full-body scans compared, FAQ and About.
Has Soma Axon gone through FDA clearance?
No. Soma's comparison table lists Soma Axon's medical status as general wellness, and the pod isn't a medical device. It isn't cleared or approved by the FDA, as Soma's FAQ puts it. Soma Axon is still being built. There's nothing to try yet, and the waitlist hears first when the first pod opens.
If I use Soma, does that make Soma my healthcare provider?
Using Soma doesn't make it your clinician. Its Terms of Use say that using Soma doesn't create a clinician-patient relationship between you and Soma. The same Terms describe Soma as a general wellness product that isn't medical care, and they tell you to talk to a qualified clinician about your health. Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, is still building its first pod.
From Terms of Use and About.
Are the answers from Soma's AI features medical advice?
They aren't. Soma's Terms of Use call its AI features informational only: they can be wrong or incomplete, and they're not medical advice. No AI answer or computed result from Soma takes the place of a clinician. The features are optional, and Soma doesn't turn them on for you. Soma itself is a general wellness product.
From Terms of Use and FAQ.
Does Soma replace my doctor or my yearly check-up?
No, and Soma is direct about it: keep seeing your doctor and keep your check-ups. Soma adds a weekly reading in the months between them, and Soma Labs (somalabs.me) doesn't see its Soma Axon pod replacing a thorough check-up. Soma is a general wellness product, and it isn't medical care.
What are Soma's Terms of Use, and who are they between?
They're the agreement between you and Soma Labs Inc. They cover somalabs.me, the waitlist, the Soma app and any related service Soma operates. Soma's Privacy Policy is part of the same agreement, so using the Services means you agree to both. The current Terms were last revised on September 23, 2026.
From Terms of Use.
What do Soma's Terms of Use say about medical care?
The Terms give it a section of its own. Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, calls itself general wellness and is clear that it isn't medical care. It isn't a medical device and isn't cleared or approved by the FDA. It also isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. The same section tells you to talk to a qualified clinician about your health.
From Terms of Use, FAQ and About.
Can I share my Soma account with my partner?
No. Soma's Terms of Use say each account is for one person, so don't share it and only add your own data. You're asked to give correct information when you sign up, keep it up to date and keep your sign-in credentials confidential. You're responsible for activity through your account, and if you think someone else has access, tell Soma at legal@somalabs.me.
From Terms of Use.
What do I need to create a Soma account?
An email address. Soma's Terms of Use say a name is optional, and sign-in may be offered through Sign in with Apple. Not everything needs an account. The app's Today view runs on your phone without one, while history sync needs an account. Soma is in beta, and access can be limited by waitlist, invitation or capacity.
From Terms of Use.
Can Soma close my account, and can I close it myself?
Both can happen. You can close your Soma account at any time. Soma's Terms of Use let Soma suspend or close an account if it has reason to believe the account information is false or that you no longer meet the requirements to use Soma. By using Soma, you confirm you meet them: at least 18 years old and located in the United States.
From Terms of Use.
Who owns the data I put into Soma?
You do. Under the Terms of Use for Soma, a general wellness product, you own the data you put in: your Apple Health data, any notes or mood entries you write and any profile details you add. Soma doesn't own it. You give Soma a limited license to use that data to run and improve its services the way its Privacy Policy describes, and Soma doesn't use it beyond that.
From Terms of Use and FAQ.
Is Soma responsible if I type the wrong weight into my profile?
That one's on you. Soma's Terms of Use make you responsible for anything you type in yourself being right, such as your profile details or a note. They also say how well Soma's computed results hold up depends on your phone's sensors, on Apple Health and on any service you connect, none of which Soma controls. Soma is a general wellness product, and its results are estimates.
From Terms of Use and FAQ.
If I connect another service to Soma, can I disconnect it later?
Yes. Under Soma's Terms of Use, you control any connection to another service and can remove it at any time, and once you disconnect it, Soma stops receiving new data from it. Soma may link to or connect with services it doesn't control, such as wearable makers, integration providers and AI providers. It isn't responsible for their content, practices or availability.
From Terms of Use.
What does Soma's acceptable use section rule out?
A handful of things you agree not to do. You can't use Soma for anything unlawful, or try to reach anyone else's data without their authority. You can't reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, except where the law gives you that right. And scraping Soma, or accessing it with bots or other automated tools, is out too, according to its Terms of Use.
From Terms of Use.
Can I resell access to Soma or build my own service on top of it?
Not under Soma's Terms of Use. You agree not to resell, rent or provide Soma to others as your own service, and not to interfere with or disrupt Soma or the servers and networks that run it. For developers, Palo Alto-based Soma Labs is designing an API so the apps people already use can get their Soma results, with their permission. It isn't open yet, and there's early access to join.
From Terms of Use, Developers and About.
Can my employer use my wellness scan results to decide on a promotion?
If the scan is Soma Axon, the rules say no. Soma's Terms of Use say Soma, and anything it computes, may not be used to make a decision about someone else's employment, insurance, credit or housing. At workplaces that host the pod, Soma says the employer pays for it and never sees anyone's results. The first prototype is still being built.
From Terms of Use, For organizations and About.
If I send Soma a feature idea, can they use it without paying me?
Yes. Soma's Terms of Use say Soma may use feedback or suggestions freely, for any purpose, without any obligation or payment to you. By sending it, you also confirm the feedback is your own and that sharing it doesn't violate anyone else's rights. Questions about the Terms go to legal@somalabs.me.
From Terms of Use.
Does using Soma give me any ownership in its software?
Soma's license gives you none. Its Terms of Use grant a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable license to use the Services for your own non-commercial use, with no ownership in Soma. The names Soma, Prism and Soma Axon, the logos and the software, design and content behind the Services all belong to Soma Labs Inc.
From Terms of Use.
Can I use Soma's name or logo in my own marketing?
Only with written permission. Soma's Terms of Use say you may not use Soma's names or logos to suggest Soma endorses or sponsors anything without that permission. The names Soma, Prism and Soma Axon and the logos belong to Soma Labs Inc., the company in Palo Alto building Soma Axon. Questions about the Terms go to legal@somalabs.me.
From Terms of Use and About.
If I download Soma from the App Store, is Apple part of my agreement?
No. If you get Soma through the Apple App Store, Soma's Terms of Use say the agreement is between you and Soma, and Apple isn't a party to it. Your license is limited to Apple-branded devices you own or control, and Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for Soma.
From Terms of Use.
Can Apple refund me if the Soma app doesn't meet its warranty?
It may. Soma's Terms of Use say that if Soma fails to meet a warranty it has made, a user who got it through the App Store may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price, if any. Beyond that, Apple has no other warranty obligation regarding Soma, to the extent the law allows. Soma itself is free during its beta.
From Terms of Use.
Who handles a claim about the Soma app, Soma Labs or Apple?
Soma Labs Inc. does. Its Terms of Use make Soma Labs, a Palo Alto company, responsible for any claim relating to Soma, from product liability claims to regulatory and consumer protection claims, and Apple isn't. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries who can enforce the Terms. Apart from that, the Terms give no one other than you and Soma the right to enforce them.
From Terms of Use and About.
Do extra terms apply if I test Soma through TestFlight?
They do. If you use a beta build of Soma through TestFlight, Soma's Terms of Use say Apple's TestFlight Terms of Use apply as well. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) calls itself a pre-release product in beta, so its features can change, break or disappear without notice.
From Terms of Use and About.
What do I confirm about embargoes and other terms when I use Soma?
Soma's Terms of Use have you confirm that you aren't located in a country subject to a US government embargo and that you aren't on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties. You also still have to follow any other third-party terms that apply to you, such as your carrier's agreement. Soma is offered only in the United States today.
From Terms of Use.
Can I stop using Soma whenever I want, and does anything in the terms still apply after?
Yes, you can stop at any time and for any reason, including by deleting the app. Some parts of Soma's Terms of Use survive after you stop: the license to backup copies of your data until they roll off, plus the sections on Feedback, Soma's Property, Disclaimers, Limitation of Liability, Indemnity, Resolving Disputes, Governing Law and General Terms.
From Terms of Use.
Can Soma shut off my access or end the beta?
It can. Soma's Terms of Use let Soma suspend or end your access if you violate the Terms, or if it ends the beta or discontinues the Services, and Soma says it will give notice first where it reasonably can. Soma also doesn't promise that any feature, or the Services as a whole, will always be available during the beta.
From Terms of Use.
Does Soma promise its estimates will be right?
Not in writing. Soma's Terms of Use provide the Services as is and as available, and disclaim all warranties to the extent the law allows. Soma doesn't warrant that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any estimate it produces will be right. Soma's pages add that every number it shows comes with its margin of error, and Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, describes itself as a general wellness product.
From Terms of Use, Home, FAQ and About.
How much could Soma owe me if something goes wrong?
Soma's Terms of Use cap it. To the extent the law allows, Soma's total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of what you paid Soma in the 12 months before the claim, or US$100. Neither side is liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, again as far as the law allows. Nothing in the Terms limits any liability the law doesn't allow to be limited.
From Terms of Use.
Do Soma's terms make me cover Soma's costs if I break the rules?
They include an indemnity. Under Soma's Terms of Use, you agree to defend and indemnify Soma against any claim arising from your violation of the Terms or of the law. Questions about what the Terms mean go to legal@somalabs.me, and questions about your data go to privacy@somalabs.me.
From Terms of Use.
How are disputes with Soma resolved?
First by talking. Soma's Terms of Use ask you to contact legal@somalabs.me and describe the problem, and Soma will try in good faith to resolve it directly for 60 days. If that doesn't settle it, the dispute goes to binding, individual arbitration under the Federal Arbitration Act instead of court, administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules.
From Terms of Use.
Where would a Soma arbitration hearing take place?
You pick between two options. Soma's Terms of Use say an arbitration hearing takes place by video or in the county where you live, at your choice. The American Arbitration Association administers it under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, and fees are as those rules set.
From Terms of Use.
Can I still take Soma to small claims court?
Yes, if the claim qualifies. Soma's Terms of Use let either side bring a qualifying claim in small claims court. Either side may also go to court, instead of arbitration, for a claim of intellectual property infringement or to stop unauthorized access to the Services. Most other disputes go to individual arbitration unless you opt out of it.
From Terms of Use.
Can I join a class action against Soma?
Soma's Terms of Use say claims can only be brought individually. There's no class action, consolidated action or representative action, and no jury trial. If the class action waiver is found unenforceable for a particular claim, only that claim goes to court. And if the law requires a claim for public injunctive relief to be heard in court, it goes there after the rest of the dispute is arbitrated individually.
From Terms of Use.
How do I opt out of Soma's arbitration clause?
Email legal@somalabs.me within 30 days of the first time you accept Soma's Terms of Use, with your name and a clear statement that you opt out of arbitration. If you opt out, disputes between you and Soma are resolved in court, as the Governing Law section describes. Without an opt-out, disputes that aren't settled directly go to binding, individual arbitration.
From Terms of Use.
Which state's law governs Soma's terms?
California's. Soma's Terms of Use are governed by California law, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and the Federal Arbitration Act governs the section on resolving disputes. Any dispute that isn't arbitrated is heard in the state or federal courts in Santa Clara County, California.
From Terms of Use.
How will I know if Soma changes its terms?
For a material change, Soma's Terms of Use say Soma will tell you in the app, on somalabs.me or by email before the change takes effect, and using the Services after that means you accept it. A change to the Resolving Disputes section never applies to a dispute you already gave Soma notice of.
From Terms of Use.
What makes up the whole agreement between me and Soma?
Soma's Terms of Use and its Privacy Policy, together. The Terms call the pair the entire agreement between you and Soma about the Services. Soma may assign the Terms, for example as part of a merger or acquisition, but you can't assign them. Nothing in them creates a partnership, joint venture, agency or employment relationship between you and Soma.
From Terms of Use.
Is Soma liable if an outage stops the app from working?
Not for something reasonably beyond its control. Soma's Terms of Use say neither Soma nor you is liable for a delay or failure caused by events like that. The examples they give are a natural disaster, a power or internet outage and an outage at a service Soma relies on. Soma is also a beta product whose features can change or break without notice.
From Terms of Use.
If Soma translates its terms, which version counts?
The English one. Soma's Terms of Use say that if Soma provides a translation, the English version controls when there's a conflict. The rest of the Terms still applies if any part turns out to be unenforceable, and Soma not enforcing a part isn't a waiver of it. Soma offers its Services only in the United States today.
From Terms of Use.
How does Soma send me legal notices?
By email. Under Soma's Terms of Use, you agree that Soma may communicate with you electronically, and a notice to you goes to the email on your account or your waitlist email. Notices to Soma go to legal@somalabs.me.
From Terms of Use.
How does a weekly body scan compare with a yearly check-up?
They read you on very different clocks. A check-up reads you once a year, and Soma Labs (somalabs.me) says its weekly pod, Soma Axon, will read you every week, which adds up to 52 whole-body reads a year. Soma calls a yearly check-up thorough but notes that a year is a long gap. The pod is a general wellness product that isn't meant to stand in for that check-up, and Soma tells people to keep theirs.
