Weight, body fat and lean mass
What a smart scale measures, and how to weigh yourself so the trend means something.
The measures
- Weight is what any scale gives you.
- Body fat is the share of your weight that's fat, as a percentage.
- Lean body mass is everything else: muscle, bone, organs and water.
- BMI is weight divided by height squared. It says nothing about fat versus muscle.
Smart scales estimate body fat and lean mass by passing a tiny current through your feet. The estimate moves with how much water you hold, so day-to-day numbers jump about.
Weighing well
- Same time each day, ideally in the morning after the bathroom and before eating or drinking.
- Barefoot, with dry feet, on a hard floor.
- Look at the weekly trend, not a single day.
In Soma
Weight, body fat, lean mass and BMI are in Longevity > Body. Lean mass sits at the top, since keeping muscle matters as you age. Weigh yourself in Track if you don't have a smart scale. Smart scales and blood pressure cuffs shows how to connect one.
