Steps, walking speed and movement

Where your steps come from with or without a watch, and the walking measures your iPhone takes.

Steps

Soma counts steps from Apple Health, and from your iPhone's own motion sensor, so a day without your watch still counts. If your watch and phone both count, Apple Health avoids counting a step twice.

Walking speed and steadiness

Your iPhone measures how you walk when you carry it, in a pocket or bag: walking speed, step length and how steady you are. Walking speed is a good sign of overall fitness as the years go by. It shows in Longevity > Body, under Fitness.

Stand hours

Apple Watch counts the hours you stood and moved for at least a minute. You can add a Stand hours card to Today, and a Stand reminder in Notifications.

In Soma's scores

Steps feed Strain when there's no heart data, and Trends checks whether your step count shapes your sleep.
