What the pod reads

What does a whole-body scan actually cover?

That depends on who's offering it. Soma's guide to full-body scans says the phrase can mean an hour in an MRI machine, a few minutes under a DEXA arm or 30 seconds on a smart scale. Each reads different things, so it's worth asking what a scan measures before you book. Soma Axon, the weekly pod Soma Labs is building, is meant to cover skin photos, heart and breathing, ECG, EEG, thermal imaging, body composition, balance and grip strength. Soma calls it a general wellness product, and it isn't available yet.

How does Soma Axon read my heart and breathing?

Cameras read your pulse and breathing without touching you, according to Soma, so there's no cuff to wear and no wires. Soma Axon also carries an ECG alongside thermal imaging, EEG, body composition and grip. The full read takes a few minutes, and every value is meant to come with its margin of error. These are general wellness readings, and the pod is a prototype still being built. Soma keeps a waitlist.

How does Soma Axon measure body composition?

You stand on the pod's floor plate with your hands on its grips while a very small electrical current takes the reading. Soma says that's the same basic way a smart scale reads body composition. The pod will also read you under the same light, from the same positions and with the same instrument every week. Soma Axon isn't a medical device. Soma Labs, a Palo Alto company, is still building the first prototype. People on the waitlist will hear first when a pod opens.

How do I track body composition more reliably than with my bathroom scale?

Soma Labs argues that seeing real change takes the same measurement, taken the same way, every week. Its blog notes that a bathroom scale can read differently on a rug than on tile, and that a morning weigh-in usually comes in lower than one after dinner, sometimes by a kilo or more. A smart scale at home estimates body composition with a very small electrical current. Soma Axon will use the same basic method on a floor plate and grips, under the same light each week, as a general wellness product that isn't available yet.

What does Soma mean when it says it reads the whole body the same way every week?

Soma's point is that a change should mean something. Soma Axon's pod, lighting and camera angles don't change between visits, and you stand in the same spot with your hands on the same two grips, so what shifts from week to week is you. One reading alone doesn't say much, Soma adds, while readings taken the same way every week show what's changing and how fast. It's a general wellness product, still being built, with a waitlist.

Is there a way to see my heart and breathing measured the same way every week?

Two readings are hard to compare when the hour, the room or the device changes, as Soma's blog points out. Soma Axon is being built to hold those still: cameras read your pulse and breathing without touching you, under the same light and camera angles every week, with no cuff or wires. These are wellness readings, and Soma isn't medical care. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company behind it, is still building the first prototype and keeps a waitlist.

What does Soma mean by reading the mind?

Soma means stress and recovery, read from your nervous system and set next to how you say you feel. In the Soma app, Mind gives one score for the nervous system and shows what moved it, reading HRV, resting heart rate and breathing against your own usual range. Soma is a general wellness product and isn't medical care. The app isn't ready for the public yet, and Soma keeps a waitlist.

How does Soma look at sleep?

Soma's question about sleep is whether it makes up for what your days take out of you. At a pod visit, someone from Soma asks how you slept, when you last ate and whether you trained, so a short night gets noted next to the numbers. In the Soma app, the Mind score sits beside last night's sleep and the day's stress peaks. It's all general wellness, and Soma Axon and the app are still on the way, with a waitlist.

What does the gut part of Soma look at?

Soma sums up its gut view as what you eat, how you feel and how your body responds. The public pages stop there, without naming which instrument or part of the app handles it. Like every number Soma shows, any figure drawn from that view should carry a margin of error. Soma is a general wellness product. Soma Axon and the Soma app aren't available yet, and there's a waitlist.

What does Soma mean by activity?

Strength, balance and how you move, which Soma calls the first things to change with age. In Soma Axon, the floor plate reads balance along with body composition and a pair of grips handles grip strength, all measured the same way at every visit so a slow change can show up as a trend. Soma Labs, a Palo Alto company, is building the pod as a general wellness product. There's a waitlist.

How can I follow my balance as I get older?

Soma Labs counts balance, along with strength and how you move, among the first things to change with age. Its pod, Soma Axon, is being built to read balance on a floor plate at every weekly visit, the same way each time, so a slow shift can show up as a trend. It's a general wellness product. Keep your regular check-ups too, since Soma doesn't replace them. The pod isn't available yet, and there's a waitlist.

How does Soma Axon test grip strength?

Through a pair of grips you hold during the reading. Soma lists grip strength among the pod's readings, next to skin photos, heart and breathing, ECG, EEG, thermal imaging, body composition and balance. Soma counts strength among the first things to change with age, and the pod reads it the same way at every visit. Its pages don't go further into the grip procedure. Soma Axon is a general wellness product, still a prototype, with a waitlist.

How can I follow my grip strength as I get older?

Soma Labs, which is building a weekly body scan in Palo Alto, calls strength one of the first things to change with age. Its pod, Soma Axon, is designed with a pair of grips that read grip strength at every visit, alongside balance and body composition, so you can see the trend week to week. It's a general wellness product and doesn't replace your check-ups. The pod isn't available yet, but there's a waitlist.

How is a weekly body scan different from a yearly check-up?

The main difference is how often you're read. Soma says a check-up reads you once a year while Soma reads you every week, which adds up to 52 whole-body reads a year against one. Its blog calls the yearly check-up thorough, but notes a year is a long gap in which a slow change can go unnoticed. Soma is a general wellness product and doesn't replace the check-up or your doctor. Soma Axon, its weekly pod, isn't available yet.

Does Soma Axon photograph my skin?

Yes, at every visit. You turn a quarter at a time so the cameras can photograph your skin all the way around, from the same positions and under the same light each week. That leaves you photos from each visit to look back on, or to show a clinician if you choose. Soma won't tell you whether a mole is harmful, and staff never see the photos. It's a general wellness product, and the pod is still being built.

From FAQ, Home, Blog and Compare.

Does Soma Axon use X-rays or any radiation?

No. Soma Axon uses no X-rays, no CT and nothing else ionizing. It reads you with cameras, light and sensors you touch, like the floor plate under your feet and the grips in your hands. It isn't an MRI either, and it doesn't take images of your organs. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod is still being built, so there's a waitlist.

From FAQ, Home and Compare.

What won't Soma Axon measure?

Soma is clear about a few limits. Soma Axon won't image your organs and won't measure eye pressure, and Soma won't tell you whether a mole is harmful. The pod sticks to skin photos, heart and breathing, ECG, EEG, thermal imaging, body composition, balance and grip strength. Soma is a general wellness product and isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. The first prototype is still being built.

Will Soma tell me whether a mole is harmful?

No. Whether a mole is harmful is something Soma says it won't tell you. What Soma Axon does is photograph your skin at every visit as you turn a quarter at a time, so you'd have photos from each week to look back on and to show a clinician if you choose. It's a general wellness product and isn't medical care. The pod isn't available yet, and there's a waitlist.

How is Soma Axon's skin photography different from a dermatologist's skin check?

At a dermatology practice, a skin check is a head-to-toe look at your skin, sometimes with photos. Soma's full-body scans guide puts it at about 10 to 30 minutes. Soma Axon photographs your skin at every weekly visit, from the same positions and under the same light, but Soma won't tell you whether a mole is harmful. Soma is a general wellness product and doesn't replace your doctor. The pod isn't available yet.

From Full-body scans compared, FAQ, Blog and Compare.

Which Soma Axon readings come from the cameras?

Pulse, breathing and your skin. Soma says the cameras read your pulse and breathing and photograph your skin without touching you, while thermal, EEG, ECG, body composition and grip take the rest. The cameras keep the same angles every week, in a closed cabin with the same light. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod is still a prototype with a waitlist.
