What the pod reads

Does Soma Axon take an ECG?

Yes. ECG is one of the sensors Soma lists for the pod, alongside cameras, thermal imaging, EEG, body composition and grip. Soma's pages don't go into how the ECG is set up. They do say Soma is a general wellness product, it isn't a medical device and it isn't cleared or approved by the FDA. Soma Axon is still being built, so there's a waitlist for now.

Is there EEG in Soma Axon, and what's it for?

EEG is on the pod's list of sensors, next to cameras, thermal, ECG, body composition and grip, all in one closed pod. Soma's public pages name it as a sensor and stop there. Every value Soma shows is meant to come with its margin of error and a note on whether the science behind each one is well established or still being tested. Soma Axon is a general wellness product being built by Soma Labs in Palo Alto, and it isn't available yet.

Why is thermal imaging part of Soma Axon?

Soma includes thermal imaging among the sensors in the pod, along with cameras, EEG, ECG, a floor plate and a pair of grips, all used in one visit. Its public pages list it without saying more. What they do promise applies here too: every number comes with its margin of error, and anything that wasn't measured cleanly stays empty in place of a guess. The pod is a general wellness product and a prototype still being built.

Is there a scan that reads skin, heart and body composition in a few minutes?

Soma's comparison page puts the landscape this way: rings and watches read a few signals all day, while clinic scans read much more, less often. Soma Axon is being built to read the whole body every week, in a few minutes: skin photos, heart and breathing, body composition, balance and grip strength, plus ECG, EEG and thermal imaging. Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, is building the first prototype of this general wellness pod now. It isn't available yet and has a waitlist.

How can I see my body change week to week while lifting weights?

A few options exist today. A smart scale at home estimates body composition with a very small electrical current, and gyms have 3D body scanners that measure shape and estimate fat and lean mass in under a minute, according to Soma's full-body scans guide. Soma Labs is building Soma Axon for a weekly view, with pods planned for gyms so members can see what their training changes. It's a general wellness product for adults 18 and over. It isn't available yet, and there's a waitlist.

How is Soma Axon different from a smart ring?

A smart ring reads a few signals all day, like your pulse, sleep and steps, according to Soma. Soma Axon reads the whole body once a week: skin photos, heart and breathing, ECG, EEG, thermal imaging, body composition, balance and grip strength. Soma sees the two working together, since the Soma app reads your phone and watch between visits. In its words, the ring covers your nights and the pod covers the week. It's a general wellness product that Soma Labs is still building in Palo Alto.

Do I need a smartwatch if I'm going to use Soma Axon?

No, a watch is optional. If you wear one, the Soma app gets more detail about the days between visits, and Soma describes the split as the watch covering the days and the pod covering the week. The app itself needs an iPhone, since it reads Apple Health. Soma is a general wellness product, and its waitlist will hear when the pod opens and when the app is ready.

Can Soma Axon read me if I wear a fitted garment?

It can, with one limit. Soma will give you a fitted garment if you'd rather not stand in your underwear, but the skin it covers won't be photographed. The skin photos are taken as you turn a quarter at a time, so covered areas simply won't appear in them. Soma's pages don't say the garment changes the other readings. The pod is a general wellness product still being built, and there's a waitlist.

Can I get my whole body read without undressing fully?

It depends on the scan. A skin check at a dermatology practice is a head-to-toe look at your skin, per Soma's full-body scans guide. With Soma Axon, you'd change in a private room and stand in your underwear so the cameras can photograph your skin as you turn a quarter at a time. If you'd rather, Soma offers a fitted garment, though the skin it covers won't be photographed. Staff never see the skin photos, only an outline of your body. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building this general wellness pod, hasn't opened one yet.

How can I check my breathing rate regularly without buying another gadget?

The Soma app is designed to show what your phone and watch measure, sorted into Today, Body and Mind. Mind reads HRV, resting heart rate and breathing against your own usual range. Once a week, Soma Axon's cameras would add a reading of pulse and breathing taken without touching you. The app needs an iPhone, since it reads Apple Health. Soma is a general wellness product, and neither the app nor the pod is ready for the public yet.

Why is my watch's heart rate reading jumpy during workouts?

Soma's blog explains that a watch's optical sensor reads your pulse through the skin and gets less reliable when your wrist moves or the strap is loose. Watches still have a big advantage in being worn all day, which lets them follow heart rate and sleep trends between check-ups. Soma Axon, which Soma Labs is building, takes a different approach once a week: cameras read pulse and breathing while you stand still in the same pod. The pod isn't a medical device, and it isn't available yet.

Is Soma Axon's heart reading like a smartwatch's?

A watch is worn all day, so it can follow trends in heart rate and sleep between check-ups, as Soma's blog puts it. Soma Axon reads once a week. Its cameras read pulse and breathing without touching you, and an ECG is one of the pod's sensors. Between visits, the Soma app keeps reading from your phone and watch. Soma Axon is a general wellness product, and it's still being built.

Can Soma compare my resting pulse from one week to the next?

That's what the design is for. Soma says the sameness of Soma Axon is deliberate: if your resting pulse is higher than last week, it wants to be able to say the change came from you and rule out the room or the equipment. After a handful of visits, Soma will have a baseline built from your own readings, and a slow change like a resting pulse creeping up over a month of short nights should show up as a trend you can see. Soma calls this general wellness, and the pod isn't available yet.

Is there a way to get my heart read without a cuff or sticky electrodes?

A watch already reads your pulse through the skin with an optical sensor, as Soma's blog describes, though it gets less reliable when the wrist moves or the strap is loose. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building Soma Axon, is designing its pod with cameras that read heart and breathing, so you don't need a cuff or any wires. You'd stand with nothing strapped to you. It's a general wellness product, and the first prototype is still being built, so there's a waitlist rather than appointments.

Does Soma Axon need wires or stickers on my chest?

No. Soma describes standing in the pod with nothing strapped to you, and says the cameras read your heart and breathing without a cuff or any wires. Your hands hold the grips and your feet rest on the plate, and cameras, light and contact sensors take their readings in a few minutes. There's no needle either unless you add the optional blood test. Soma Axon isn't a medical device, and it's being built now, with a waitlist for updates.

From Home, FAQ and About.

Is Soma Axon's heart reading a medical test?

No. Soma is a general wellness product, it isn't a medical device and it isn't cleared or approved by the FDA. Its Terms say Soma's estimates come from wellness signals in place of clinical tests and can be wrong. Soma Axon reads heart and breathing with cameras and includes an ECG, and every value comes with its margin of error. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company making it, hasn't opened a pod yet.

From FAQ, Terms of Use, Home and About.

Can a camera really read my pulse?

The cameras in Soma Axon read pulse, breathing and skin without touching you, according to Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building the pod. Separately, it runs research studies that measure pulse from a camera next to a reference chest strap. Soma promises each value will come with its margin of error and a note saying whether that science is well established or still being tested. It's a general wellness product, and neither the pod nor camera-based pulse in the app is available yet.

Does the Soma app track HRV?

Yes, in its Mind view. The Soma app reads HRV, resting heart rate and breathing against your own usual range, then gives one score for your nervous system and shows what moved it. Tap the score and you'll see which of those measures shifted, next to the day's stress peaks and last night's sleep. Soma is a general wellness product. The app needs an iPhone because it reads Apple Health, and the waitlist will hear when it's ready.

From Home and FAQ.

Is there a balance test I could repeat every week in the same conditions?

Soma Labs is designing one into Soma Axon, a closed pod whose floor plate reads balance along with body composition at every visit. The pod, its lighting and its camera angles are meant to stay the same between visits. You'd stand in the same spot each week, so a change in the reading should come from you. Soma's pages don't describe the balance procedure itself, and the pod is a general wellness product still being built, with a waitlist.

From Home, FAQ, The same instrument, every week and About.

Do I have to stand on one leg in Soma Axon?

Soma hasn't described anything like that. What it does describe is standing still for a few minutes with your hands on the grips and your feet on the floor plate, turning a quarter at a time for the skin photos, while the plate reads balance and body composition. The first version is for adults who can stand still for a few minutes. Soma Axon is a general wellness product still being built.
