What the pod reads
How do I make a weekly body check a habit?
Soma Labs is designing Soma Axon around that idea: a visit that's in and out in the time it takes to get a coffee, in places people already are, like gyms, workplaces and pharmacies. Soma says it's meant to be a weekly habit and will be priced like one. It's a general wellness product that isn't available yet.

What research does Soma do on camera-based pulse?
Separate from the app, Soma Labs Inc. runs research studies, for example measuring pulse from a camera next to a reference chest strap. The studies are for adults only, and each has its own written consent form. Using the Soma app doesn't enroll you in one. Camera-based pulse in the app and Soma Axon itself aren't available yet, and Soma is a general wellness product.

Is there a single pod that combines cameras, EEG, ECG and body composition?
Soma Axon is being built as one: cameras, thermal, EEG, ECG, body composition and grip, all in one closed pod, used in a single visit of a few minutes. Soma says it's the same instrument every week. It's a general wellness product that isn't a medical device, and Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company behind it, is still building the first prototype.
Smart scale or weekly pod: which suits frequent travel?
A smart scale stays at home, which Soma calls its strength: you can step on it every morning in 30 seconds when you're there. Soma Axon is planned for many kinds of venue, from gyms and workplaces to pharmacies, longevity clinics and Soma's own studio, all on one account, so your record follows you from one pod to another. It's a general wellness product, and no pod is open yet.

Does Soma Axon collect anything today?
No. Soma's Privacy Policy says two features aren't available yet, camera-based pulse measurement in the app and the Soma Axon device, and neither collects anything today. Before either starts, Soma will give a separate notice and ask for your explicit consent. Soma is a general wellness product, and the first prototype of the pod is still being built.

How can I measure my body if I'm uncomfortable being touched?
Without touching you, the cameras in Soma Axon read your pulse, breathing and skin. Nothing gets strapped to you. The sensors you do touch are the floor plate under your feet and the grips in your hands, and you'd change in a private room first. It's a general wellness product that Soma Labs is still building.
Is Soma in beta?
Yes. Soma's Terms describe it as a pre-release product in beta, whose features can change, break or disappear without notice. Soma may limit access by waitlist, invitation or capacity. It's free during the beta, and if a paid feature comes later, you'll see its price and be asked to agree before any charge. Soma Axon isn't available yet, and Soma is a general wellness product.

Smartwatch or Soma Axon for counting steps?
Steps are one of the examples Soma gives of what a watch reads all day, along with pulse and sleep. Soma Axon doesn't list steps. It reads the whole body once a week, and the Soma app keeps reading from your phone and watch between visits. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod isn't available yet.
What does Soma write about on its blog?
Notes from the team building Soma, on the science, the instrument and the choices it makes. Soma says it will use the blog to write about building Soma Axon as it happens, including the research behind it. Posts so far include one on why the pod reads you the same way every week and one on the meaning of know thyself. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company behind it, calls Soma a general wellness product.

What do smart rings and watches actually read?
Soma describes them as reading a few signals all day, like your pulse, sleep and steps. Its blog adds that being worn all day lets a watch follow trends in heart rate and sleep between check-ups. Soma Axon is built to read the whole body once a week, and Soma sees the two working together through the Soma app. It's a general wellness product that isn't available yet.
From FAQ, The same instrument, every week, Home and Compare.
Where does Soma get what it says about other products?
From their makers' own pages, linked and dated on each comparison, Soma says. Its own row describes Soma Axon as the pod is being designed, since it isn't available yet. Soma is a general wellness product, and Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company behind it, is still building the first prototype.
What should I expect from my first few weeks of body scans?
With Soma Axon, a baseline comes first. Soma says one visit doesn't say much on its own, and after a handful of visits it will have a baseline built from your own readings. After that, a slow change should show up as a trend you can see. Each visit ends with one calm number, and the rest is in the Soma app with the margin of error for each value. It's a general wellness product, and the pod isn't available yet.

How does a weekly pod compare with a watch for building a personal baseline?
A watch follows trends in heart rate and sleep all day, as Soma's blog notes. Soma Axon builds a baseline from your own weekly readings after a handful of visits. Each reading is taken under the same light and with the same instrument, and each measure is then set against your own usual range. The Soma app reads your watch between visits. It's a general wellness product that isn't available yet.

Is there a body scan that fits into a gym session?
Some gyms already have 3D body scanners, which take under a minute and read shape, estimated fat and lean mass and posture, per Soma's full-body scans guide. Soma Labs is designing Soma Axon for gyms too, with a few minutes in the pod before or after a session reading body composition, balance, grip strength, skin, heart and breathing. It's a general wellness product that isn't available yet.

Can developers help shape the Soma API?
Yes. Soma says its API isn't open yet and invites developers to join early access and help shape it. Developers and researchers can tell Soma what they'd build or study through the developers page, and Soma reads every note and writes back by email. The API covers what the pod reads at each visit, and Soma is a general wellness product.
From Developers and FAQ.
How can I share my weekly body readings with another fitness app?
With Soma, through an API it's designing so the apps people already use can read their Soma results, with their permission. You'd choose what each app can read and could take that access back at any time, and each reading would come with how sure Soma is of it. The API isn't open yet. It covers what Soma Axon, a general wellness pod, reads at each visit.
From Developers and FAQ.
How does DEXA's radiation compare with a CT scan's?
DEXA uses a very low dose of X-rays, according to Soma's full-body scans guide, and some imaging clinics add CT scans of the heart or lungs, which use X-rays too. The guide doesn't give a dose for those CT scans. Soma Axon uses no X-rays, no CT and nothing else ionizing. It's a general wellness product that isn't available yet.
From Full-body scans compared, FAQ and Compare.
What does the Soma API's example request look like?
The draft example on Soma's developers page is a request to GET /v1/visits/latest, authorized with a member token. In the sample, a reading that wasn't measured returns a null value with the reason not_measured, and margin is the plus or minus around each value. Soma says the values are made up and the names will change, since it's a draft. The API isn't open yet, and it covers what Soma Axon, a general wellness pod, reads at each visit.
From Developers and FAQ.
How do I keep heart readings comparable when I switch devices?
It's hard to, since Soma's blog notes that most health numbers depend on the device as well as on you, and a watch's optical sensor gets less reliable when the wrist moves or the strap is loose. Soma Axon is designed to be the same instrument every week, with the same light and camera angles, so a change in your pulse can be traced to you. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building it, calls it a general wellness product. It isn't available yet.
From The same instrument, every week, Home, About, FAQ and Compare.
Who will I meet at a Soma Axon visit?
Someone from Soma welcomes you and asks how you slept, when you last ate and whether you trained. At venues that host a pod, Soma trains the staff to run it and help a member through a visit. Staff never see the photos of your skin, only an outline of your body. Soma Axon is a general wellness product, and the first prototype is still being built.
