What the pod reads

What's the difference between Soma and Soma Axon?

Soma Axon is the name of the pod, a closed cabin you step into once a week for a whole-body scan. Soma is the broader name the site uses for the product, which pairs the pod with the Soma app on iPhone between visits. Soma Labs Inc., in Palo Alto, is the company making both. It's a general wellness product, and neither piece is available yet.

Is Soma Axon a wearable?

No. Soma Axon is a closed pod you step into once a week, and it has nothing to charge. The wearable part is optional: if you wear a watch, the Soma app gets more detail about the days between visits, and Soma sees the watch covering the days and the pod covering the week. It's a general wellness product that isn't available yet.

Which body scans photograph your skin?

Dermatology practices do head-to-toe skin checks that sometimes include photos, according to Soma's full-body scans guide. Soma Axon, the weekly pod Soma Labs is building, is designed to photograph your skin at every visit as you turn a quarter at a time, so you'd have photos from each week to look back on. Soma won't say whether a mole is harmful, and it's a general wellness product that isn't available yet.

Which reads balance: a smart scale, a 3D body scanner or Soma Axon?

Of the three, Soma Axon is the one whose published readings include balance, taken on its floor plate along with body composition. Soma's full-body scans guide describes a smart scale as estimating body composition with a very small electrical current, and a 3D body scanner as reading shape, measurements, estimated fat and lean mass and posture. Soma Axon is a general wellness product still being built.

What does Soma Axon need from me to take a reading?

A few minutes of standing still. You change in a private room and stand in your underwear or a fitted garment, hands on the grips and feet on the plate, turning a quarter at a time for the skin photos. Soma's first version is for adults 18 and over, in the United States, who can stand still for a few minutes. It's a general wellness product, and the pod is still being built.

What's the recovery part of a Soma Axon visit?

It follows the reading: warmth, cool air and mist, light, sound and a slow breath. Soma says this part is for feeling good and isn't meant to treat anything, and you can make any part of it gentler. It isn't part of what the pod reads. Soma Axon is a general wellness product, and the first prototype is still being built.

Is there a weekly body scan meant to be affordable?

That's the stated aim of Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building Soma Axon: to make knowing yourself something you can measure every week, at a price a person can actually pay. Soma says it's meant to be a weekly habit and will be priced like one, though no price is published yet. It's a general wellness product, and the waitlist will hear prices first.

What does 'general wellness product' mean for Soma?

It's how Soma describes itself, and it comes with limits. Soma isn't medical care and isn't a medical device. It isn't cleared or approved by the FDA, and it isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Using Soma doesn't create a clinician-patient relationship, and Soma tells people to keep seeing their doctor. Soma Axon isn't available yet.

Can I measure my body at a place I already go every week?

That's the idea behind where Soma Labs plans to put Soma Axon: in its own studio and in longevity clinics, gyms, workplaces and pharmacies, where people already are, all on one account. A visit takes about as long as getting a coffee. The pod is a general wellness product, and none is open yet.

Is there any kind of body check that's meant to be done every week?

Most scans run on a slower clock. According to Soma's full-body scans guide, whole-body MRI providers suggest once a year and DEXA providers suggest every 3 to 6 months. Soma Axon is being designed around a weekly visit instead: a few minutes in a closed pod that reads skin, heart, breathing, body composition, balance and strength, so you can see how readings change from one week to the next. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building it, describes the pod as general wellness equipment. It isn't open yet, but there's a waitlist.

Which sensors are inside the Soma Axon pod?

Cameras, thermal imaging, EEG, ECG, a body composition reading and grips, all in one closed cabin. The cameras read pulse and breathing and photograph your skin without touching you, while the floor plate handles body composition and balance and your hands rest on a pair of grips. That's the pod as Soma is designing it. Soma frames it as a wellness product, and it isn't a medical device. The first prototype is still being built, so none of it can be tried yet.

Why does my weight change so much between night and morning?

Mostly water, plus whatever you ate and drank that evening. Soma's blog explains that weighing yourself after dinner and again the next morning before breakfast usually gives a lower morning number, sometimes by a kilo (about two pounds) or more. That's the kind of problem Soma Labs started with: the room, the time of day and the instrument change from one reading to the next, so a real change is hard to tell from noise. Its pod, Soma Axon, is meant to read the whole body the same way every week. The pod is meant for general wellness and isn't available yet.

Should I buy a smart scale or wait for Soma Axon to track my body composition?

They suit different habits. A smart scale lives at home, and Soma notes that's its strength: you can step on it every morning in 30 seconds. Soma Axon is a pod you'd visit once a week, reading body composition the same basic way with a very small electrical current while adding skin photos, balance, grip strength, EEG, thermal imaging, heart and breathing. It's a general wellness product, still being built and with no announced price. Soma keeps a waitlist.

Does the Soma pod weigh you?

Weight isn't on the list Soma publishes for the pod. What the floor plate is described as reading is body composition and balance, with body composition taken through a very small electrical current while your hands rest on the grips, the same basic way a smart scale works. The rest of the read covers skin photos, heart and breathing, ECG, EEG, thermal imaging and grip strength. Soma describes all of it as general wellness. Soma Axon is still a prototype in the works, and there's a waitlist.

Which body composition scans don't use X-rays?

Among the full-body scans Soma compares, DEXA is the one that uses X-rays, at a very low dose. A 3D body scanner measures your shape with no radiation, and a smart scale estimates body composition with a very small electrical current. Soma Axon, the weekly pod Soma Labs is building in Palo Alto, uses no X-rays, no CT and nothing else ionizing. It reads body composition with that same kind of small current. Soma Axon isn't medical care, and it isn't available yet.

How is Soma Axon different from a DEXA scan?

A DEXA scan measures what you're made of, down to bone density. Soma's full-body scans guide puts it at about 7 to 11 minutes, with providers suggesting one every 3 to 6 months and a very low dose of X-rays. Soma Axon uses no X-rays or anything else ionizing. It's built for a weekly visit that reads body composition with a very small electrical current, along with skin, heart and breathing, balance and grip. Bone density isn't on its published list. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building the pod, calls it a general wellness product and is still working on the first prototype.

How often is it worth getting a DEXA scan?

Soma's guide to full-body scans reports that DEXA providers suggest one every 3 to 6 months. A scan takes about 7 to 11 minutes and reads body fat, visceral fat, lean mass and bone density using a very low dose of X-rays. Whether that schedule suits you is a question for your clinician. Soma Labs is building Soma Axon for weekly visits, reading body composition with a small electrical current in place of X-rays. It isn't a medical device, and it isn't available yet.

Is there a way to see whether I lose muscle over a winter of training less?

There are options today: a smart scale estimates body composition at home with a very small electrical current, and DEXA providers suggest a scan every 3 to 6 months. Soma Labs uses this very case as its example. It says a slow change like losing muscle over a winter of training less should show up as a trend in weekly Soma Axon readings. The pod reads body composition along with strength and balance, as a general wellness product. It's still being built, and there's a waitlist.

Will Soma Axon show if I'm gaining muscle from lifting?

Soma Axon will read body composition at every visit, and Soma says it's built for the trend, with the same readings taken the same way each week so you can see how your body changes. Its own example runs the other way: muscle lost over a winter of training less should show up as a trend. Gyms are among the places Soma plans to host pods, so members can see what their training changes week after week. Soma describes the pod as general wellness equipment. Nothing is open yet, and there's a waitlist.

Why does my body fat reading change every time I step on my scale?

A home reading moves with more than your body. Soma's blog says most health numbers depend on the hour, the room and the device as well as on you. Even a bathroom scale can give a different number on a rug than on tile, and weight swings overnight, mostly with water and what you ate and drank. Soma Axon is being designed to hold those conditions steady, with the same light, positions and instrument every week. Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, hasn't opened a pod yet. The pod isn't a medical device.
