A visit, step by step

Can I use Soma without an iPhone?

Not the app. The Soma app needs an iPhone, since it reads Apple Health. It reads that data only with your permission. The pod does the full read once a week, and a watch is optional. Soma is a general wellness product, and neither the pod nor the app is ready yet, so the waitlist is where to start.

From FAQ, Privacy Policy and Home.

What happens between Soma Axon visits?

The Soma app keeps reading. Your phone and watch already measure you all day, and the app reads them between visits, with the pod doing the full read once a week. It runs on iPhone and reads Apple Health, and it never writes anything back. Soma isn't medical care, and none of this is ready yet.

From FAQ, Home, Blog and Compare.

Do I need to charge anything for Soma Axon?

Not the pod. Soma's side-by-side table lists Soma Axon as having nothing to charge, since it's a pod you visit once a week. The Soma app runs on your iPhone, and a watch is optional. Soma is a general wellness product still building its first pod.

What is Soma's own studio?

It's one of the places Soma Axon pods will stand, alongside longevity clinics, gyms, workplaces and pharmacies, all on one account. Soma hasn't said where it'll be. People on the waitlist will be the first to hear where the first pod opens. Soma Axon is a general wellness product, and the first prototype is still being built.

From About and FAQ.

How does Soma choose where to put its first pods?

Soma is choosing the first places to host Soma Axon now, and it starts by hearing from venues: where a place is, how many people come through and what it would want from a pod. Soma then visits the space and talks through how a pod would fit the venue's day. It reads every note sent through its organizations form and writes back by email. The first prototype is still being built, and the pod is general wellness.

From For organizations, About and FAQ.

Who trains the staff at a venue that hosts Soma Axon?

Soma does. Once a venue is set to host, Soma installs the pod and trains the staff to run it and to help a member through a visit. Members then change in a private room, spend a few minutes in the pod and leave with one calm number. Soma Axon is a general wellness product, and Soma is choosing the first places to host one while it builds the first prototype.

From For organizations, FAQ and About.

Is Soma Axon enclosed?

Yes. Soma Axon is a closed cabin with the same light and camera angles every week, and everything it uses sits inside that one closed pod: cameras, thermal, EEG, ECG, body composition and grip. You change in a private room before stepping in. It's a wellness product and isn't medical care, and Soma is still building the first one.

From Home, FAQ and About.

Are the pictures of Soma Axon real?

They're concept renders. Soma's blog says so plainly, and its about page shows a concept render of the inside of the pod, since the first prototype is still being built. There's no pod to visit yet, and the waitlist will hear first where the first one opens. Soma Axon is a general wellness product.

Why does a Soma visit include a recovery part?

Soma says it's there to help you feel good. It follows the reading with warmth, cool air and mist, light, sound and a slow breath. It isn't meant to treat anything, and you can make any part of it gentler. Soma Axon, from Soma Labs (somalabs.me), is a general wellness product still being built.

From FAQ, Home and About.

Is the recovery part the same at every Soma visit?

It's part of every visit: Soma's drawing of the pod labels light, warmth and cool air as the recovery part of each one. The full list is warmth, cool air and mist, light, sound and a slow breath. You can make any part of it gentler. It's there to help you feel good, and Soma Axon isn't a medical device.

From Home and FAQ.

What's the slow breath in Soma's recovery part?

Soma lists a slow breath as one part of the recovery that follows the reading, next to warmth, cool air and mist, light and sound. It doesn't describe it in more detail. Like the rest of the recovery part, it's there to help you feel good, it isn't meant to treat anything and you can make it gentler. Soma Axon is a general wellness product still being built.

From Home, FAQ and About.

Is there mist in Soma Axon?

Yes, in the recovery part. Cool air and mist come after the reading, alongside warmth, light, sound and a slow breath. The recovery part uses heat and cold, and you can make any part of it gentler. It's for feeling good and isn't meant to treat anything. Soma Axon isn't a medical device, and it isn't open yet.

Does eating before a body scan change the results?

It can change some numbers. Soma's blog notes that weighing yourself after dinner and again before breakfast usually gives a lower morning number, sometimes by a kilo (about two pounds) or more, mostly from water and what you ate and drank that evening. Soma Axon, the weekly pod Soma Labs is building in Palo Alto, asks when you last ate before each reading so the meal gets noted next to your numbers. It's a wellness product and isn't open yet.

From The same instrument, every week, About and FAQ.

How do my answers about sleep and training show up in Soma?

They're noted next to your numbers. A Soma score only sums up what was measured and what you told Soma, such as how you slept or whether you trained, and tapping a score shows what moved it, each measure against your own usual range. That way a short night or a hard session sits alongside the readings. Soma is a general wellness product, and Soma Axon isn't open yet.

What is Soma's fitted garment?

It's what Soma will give you to wear in Soma Axon if you'd rather not stand in your underwear. The trade-off is that the skin it covers won't be photographed, since the pod photographs your skin at every visit as you turn a quarter at a time. You change into it in a private room. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod is still being built.

From FAQ, Home and About.

Is there a body scan where I choose which skin gets photographed?

With Soma Axon, the pod Soma Labs (somalabs.me) is building, you can wear a fitted garment Soma provides, and any skin it covers won't be photographed. Otherwise you stand in your underwear and the cameras photograph your skin all the way around as you turn a quarter at a time. Staff never see the photos. It's a general wellness product that isn't open yet.

Soma Axon vs a skin check: how long does each take?

The guide Soma publishes gives a skin check at a dermatology practice about 10 to 30 minutes, for a head-to-toe look that sometimes includes photos. A Soma Axon visit asks for a few minutes of standing still, turning a quarter at a time while its cameras photograph your skin, then a recovery part. Soma won't say whether a mole is harmful, and its pod is a general wellness product still being built.

From Full-body scans compared, FAQ, Home and About.

Soma Axon vs a yearly skin check: how often is each done?

Soma's guide lists once a year as the suggested frequency for a skin check at a dermatology practice, which costs about $75 to $300 out of pocket. Soma Axon photographs your skin at every weekly visit, and Soma hasn't announced a price for it. Soma won't say whether a mole is harmful. Its pod is general wellness and isn't open yet.

Soma Axon vs a gym's 3D body scanner: where can you find each?

3D body scanners are found in gyms now, with prices set by each gym. They read shape and measurements, estimated fat and lean mass and posture in under a minute. Soma Axon pods are planned for Soma's own studio and for longevity clinics, gyms, workplaces and pharmacies, all on one account. None is open yet. Soma's pod is general wellness, and the waitlist will hear first where the first one opens.

Soma Axon vs DEXA: how do the costs compare?

Soma's guide puts a DEXA scan at about $40 to $185, with providers suggesting one every 3 to 6 months. Soma hasn't announced a price for Soma Axon: it says the pod is meant to be a weekly habit and will be priced like one, with prices shared before the first pod opens. The blood test will be an add-on with its own price. DEXA uses a very low dose of X-rays, while Soma's pod uses nothing ionizing and is a general wellness product.
