What the pod reads
Does Soma use how I say I feel?
Yes. For the mind, Soma reads stress and recovery from your nervous system and sets them next to how you say you feel. Its scores sum up what was measured and what you told Soma, like how you slept or whether you trained. Before each pod reading, someone from Soma asks those questions so the answers get noted next to the numbers. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod and app aren't ready yet.

Does Soma Axon measure leg strength?
Grip strength is the strength reading Soma lists, taken through a pair of grips. Leg strength isn't on the pod's published list. The floor plate under your feet reads body composition and balance. Soma counts strength among the first things to change with age, and it describes the pod as a general wellness product. Soma Axon is still being built, with a waitlist.
Does the Soma Axon floor plate read balance while it reads body composition?
Soma says the floor plate reads both body composition and balance, and the whole pod takes its readings in a few minutes. It doesn't spell out whether the two happen at the same moment. You stand with your feet on the plate and your hands on the grips while cameras, light and contact sensors do their work. Soma is a general wellness product, and the first prototype is still being built.
Can I see my balance readings over time in the Soma app?
The app's Body view is where weekly visits turn into a handful of facts, and it reads the trend across all of them, with a confidence note and the amount of data behind each answer. Balance is read on the floor plate at every visit, so it would feed that trend. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod and app aren't available yet.
Why does someone from Soma ask how I slept before the reading?
So a short night or a hard session gets noted next to your numbers. Soma says someone will welcome you, then ask how you slept, when you last ate and whether you trained, before each reading. Its scores only sum up what was measured and what you reported, so those answers become part of the picture. Soma is a general wellness product, and Soma Axon is still being built.

How does Soma build my baseline?
Out of your own readings. After a handful of visits, Soma says it will have a baseline built from what it has read of you. From then on, each measure in a score is set against your own usual range, and the Soma app's Body view reads the trend across all your visits. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod isn't available yet.

What if I trained hard the day before a Soma Axon visit?
Say so when you arrive. Someone from Soma asks whether you trained, along with how you slept and when you last ate, so a hard session gets noted next to the numbers. Soma's scores only sum up what was measured and what you told it, and tapping one shows what moved it against your own usual range. Soma is a general wellness product, and Soma Axon is still being built.

How can I compare my recovery from one week to the next?
Soma Labs' approach is the same measurement, taken the same way, every week. Its pod, Soma Axon, would read you weekly under the same light and with the same instrument, and the Soma app's Mind reads HRV, resting heart rate and breathing against your own usual range between visits. Before each reading, someone from Soma notes how you slept and whether you trained. It's a general wellness product, still being built, with a waitlist.

How can I follow my HRV against my own usual range?
Watches worn all day can follow heart rate trends, as Soma's blog notes. The Soma app is built to keep reading from your phone and watch. Its Mind view reads HRV, resting heart rate and breathing against your own usual range, then shows which measures moved the score. The app needs an iPhone, since it reads Apple Health. A watch is optional. Soma is a general wellness product, and the app isn't ready for the public yet.

How do I know whether a change in my pulse came from me or from the device?
Soma's blog points out that a watch's optical sensor gets less reliable when the wrist moves or the strap is loose, and that most health numbers depend on the hour, the room and the device. Soma Axon is designed so the device side stays fixed: same pod, same light, same camera angles and the same two grips every week. Soma says it wants to be able to trace a higher resting pulse to you and rule out the room or the equipment. It's a general wellness product and isn't available yet.

Why do my health numbers change from one day to the next?
Some of the change can come from the setup. Soma's blog says most health numbers depend on the hour, the room and the device as well as on you. Weight after dinner and before breakfast can differ by a kilo or more, and a watch's pulse reading gets less reliable when the strap is loose. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building Soma Axon, is designing its pod to read you the same way every week so a change means something. It's a general wellness product that isn't available yet.

How can I measure my body under the same conditions every time?
The hour, the room and the device all matter. Soma's blog says most health numbers depend on them as well as on you, and Soma Labs built its pod, Soma Axon, around that problem. It's a closed cabin with the same light and camera angles every week, where you'd stand in the same spot with your hands on the same two grips. Someone from Soma also notes how you slept, when you ate and whether you trained. It's a general wellness product that isn't open yet.

What is a personal baseline in body measurements, and how long does it take to build?
A baseline is a picture of your own usual range, built from your own readings. Soma says it will have one after a handful of weekly visits to Soma Axon. From then on, each measure is set against your usual range, and a slow change should show up as a trend you can see. Soma Labs is building the pod in Palo Alto as a general wellness product, and it isn't available yet.

Is one body scan enough to learn how my body is changing?
A single scan gives you one point in time. Soma says one reading doesn't tell you much by itself, while readings taken the same way every week show what's changing and how fast. Soma Axon is built for a weekly visit for that reason, adding up to 52 whole-body reads a year where a yearly check-up gives one. It's a general wellness product, and it isn't available yet.

What time of day should I take body measurements?
Soma doesn't set a time, but its blog shows why the hour matters. Most health numbers depend on the hour, the room and the device as well as on you. Weight usually reads lower before breakfast than after dinner. At Soma Axon visits, someone asks when you last ate, so it's noted next to the numbers. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod isn't available yet.

What does a body scan without any radiation look like?
MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves, according to Soma's full-body scans guide, while 3D scanners, smart scales and similar scans read you with light, cameras, sensors you touch or a small electrical current. Soma Axon falls in that last group: no X-rays, no CT and nothing else ionizing. It reads you with cameras, light and sensors you touch, plus a very small electrical current for body composition. It's a general wellness product that Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, is still building.

Is there a body scan you just step into?
One kind already exists at home: a smart scale, something you step onto for the 30 seconds Soma's guide mentions. Soma Labs is designing Soma Axon as a closed pod you step into once a week. You'd change in a private room, stand in your underwear with nothing strapped to you and hold a pair of grips while the reading takes a few minutes. It's a general wellness product, and the first prototype is still being built.
From Full-body scans compared, Home, FAQ and About.
How many times a year should I measure my body?
Each kind of scan has its own suggested schedule. Soma's guide says whole-body MRI providers suggest once a year, DEXA providers every 3 to 6 months and one 3D scanner maker every 30 to 90 days. Soma Axon is built for a weekly visit, which adds up to 52 whole-body reads a year. Your clinician is the one to ask about your own plan. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod isn't available yet.

What should I look for in a weekly body check?
Start by asking what it measures, as Soma's full-body scans guide suggests. Soma holds its own pod, Soma Axon, to a few promises: every number comes with its margin of error and a label for whether the science is well established or still being tested. A spot that wasn't measured cleanly stays empty, and the pod reads you the same way every visit. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod isn't available yet.

How can I fit body measurements into a weekly wellness routine?
At home, a smart scale fits a daily habit, since you can step on it every morning in 30 seconds, as Soma notes. Soma Axon is being built for a weekly one: a whole-body read in a few minutes, in and out in the time it takes to get a coffee, with your phone and watch filling in the days between through the Soma app. Soma is a general wellness product, and the pod isn't available yet.
