How the numbers work
Why does someone from Soma ask how I slept before a reading?
So the context gets written down with the numbers. Before each Soma Axon reading, someone from Soma will ask how you slept, when you last ate and whether you trained, so a short night or a hard session gets noted next to your numbers. What you report can shape a score too, since a Soma score sums up what was measured and what you told Soma. The readings are for general wellness. The pod itself is still a prototype, and there's a waitlist.

What does Soma mean by turning visits into "a handful of facts"?
It's how Body, part of the Soma app, sums up your weekly Soma Axon visits. It reads the trend across all your visits and turns them into a handful of facts, each with how sure Soma is and how much data it's based on. Soma's reasoning is that one visit doesn't say much on its own, while readings taken the same way every week show what's changing. Everything in Body is general wellness. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) hasn't opened the pod or released the app yet, and there's a waitlist.
What does Soma mean by "the same instrument, every week"?
It's a promise about Soma Axon, and also the title of a short Soma Labs blog post from September 23, 2026. The post's point is that most health numbers depend on the hour, the room and the device as well as on you, so two readings are hard to compare. Soma's answer is a pod that stays the same instrument every week, so that when a number moves, you can trust it. Soma Axon isn't a medical device. Soma Labs in Palo Alto is still building it, with a waitlist for the first opening.

Does Soma Axon read me the same way at every visit?
That's the design. Soma Axon is a closed pod that reads your heart, breathing, body composition, balance and strength the same way at every visit, and it photographs your skin each time as well. Soma says it reads the whole body the same way every week so that a change means something. In return for a weekly trip, it'll read you under the same light, from the same positions and with the same instrument. It's meant for general wellness. It isn't available yet, and Soma Labs (somalabs.me) keeps a waitlist.
Will Soma fill in a missing value from my earlier visits?
Soma's rule is that blanks stay blank. If something wasn't measured, or a sensor couldn't get a clean reading, that spot stays empty. You won't see a zero or a best guess in its place, even one drawn from earlier weeks. The draft Soma API keeps the same rule and says outright when a value wasn't measured. Scores only sum up what was actually measured and what you reported. These are general wellness readings. Soma Axon is still a prototype, and the app isn't ready for the public, but there's a waitlist for both.

What does Soma mean when it says a change "means something"?
It's about sameness. Soma reads the whole body the same way every week so that a change means something, and the pod, its lighting and its camera angles don't change between visits. That leaves you as the thing that changes from week to week. One reading on its own doesn't tell you much, Soma adds, while readings taken the same way every week show what's changing and how fast. Soma describes itself as a general wellness product. Soma Axon is being built now, with a waitlist.
Why does Soma say one visit doesn't say much on its own?
Because Soma is after the trend. It says one reading on its own doesn't tell you much, while readings taken the same way every week show what's changing and how fast. Soma Labs puts it another way: seeing how a body changes takes the same measurement, taken the same way, every week. A year of weekly Soma Axon visits comes to 52 whole-body reads. Soma keeps all of this within general wellness. The pod is still a prototype, and the waitlist hears first.
How will Soma show the uncertainty around a single number?
With a margin of error attached. Every number Soma shows comes with one, and Soma has said each figure will carry how sure Soma is of it. Its Terms describe every number, even a biological age estimate, as an estimate shown with its uncertainty. The draft API spells the idea out for developers: margin is the plus or minus around each value, so an app can show the range next to the number. Soma's numbers are for general wellness and aren't medical care. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) keeps a waitlist while the app and pod get ready.

Are Soma's numbers worked out on my phone or on Soma's servers?
Both, depending on the feature. Today is computed on your device and works offline, and nothing shown in Today gets sent to Soma. If you turn on history sync, which is optional, a copy of your Apple Health record goes to Soma's servers, where its engines turn it into a small number of derived facts like a biological age estimate and long-term trends. Each comes back with its date, how much data it's based on and its engine version. Both paths are general wellness. The app isn't open to everyone yet, and there's a waitlist.

What does Today in the Soma app sum up?
Your day, in three scores and one next move, the moment you open the app, even in airplane mode. Today is read on your phone, so there's no network to wait on. It draws on what your phone and watch already measure, and every score in it shows what moved it. Today also runs without an account. Like everything in Soma, it's for general wellness. The Soma app isn't ready for the public yet, and the waitlist hears first when it's ready.

Are the numbers Soma shows medical results?
No. Soma is a general wellness product and isn't medical care. It isn't a medical device and isn't cleared or approved by the FDA. It isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Its Terms add that Soma's estimates come from wellness signals rather than clinical tests and can be wrong. Using Soma doesn't create a clinician-patient relationship, and for anything about your health, the Terms say to talk to a qualified clinician. Soma Axon itself is still a prototype with a waitlist.

Does Soma count what I tell it, or only what it measures?
Both, within limits. A Soma score only sums up what was measured and what you reported, such as how you slept or whether you trained. On the Mind side, stress and recovery sit next to how you say you feel. Anything you type in yourself, like a note or your profile details, is yours to keep correct, according to Soma's Terms. Soma is a wellness product, and it isn't medical care. The Soma app isn't open to the public yet, and neither is Soma Axon. Both have a waitlist.

What's the difference between the Body and Mind parts of the Soma app?
Body takes the long view of your weekly Soma Axon visits: it turns them into a handful of facts, reads the trend across all of them and always says how sure Soma is and how much data each answer is based on. Mind is about your nervous system, with one score read from your HRV, resting heart rate and breathing against your own usual range, plus a tap to see which measure moved it. Both parts belong to a general wellness product. Neither is open to the public yet, and there's a waitlist.
Why is Soma Axon a closed cabin?
So the conditions stay put. Soma describes Soma Axon as a closed cabin with the same light and camera angles every week, and it pairs that with a fixed routine: you stand in the same spot with your hands on the same two grips. With the room held constant, a number that moves points to something that changed in you. You'd visit for a few minutes once a week. It isn't a medical device and isn't cleared or approved by the FDA. The first prototype is being built now, and there's a waitlist.

How is a Soma score different from the readiness score on a smartwatch?
A smartwatch reads a few signals all day, such as pulse, sleep and steps. Soma's blog credits watches with following trends in heart rate and sleep between check-ups. Soma's scores are built to open up: each sums up only what was measured and what you reported, and a tap shows what moved it, with every measure against your own usual range. Soma Axon adds a whole-body read once a week, and the Soma app reads your watch in between. Soma is a general wellness product. Neither the app nor the pod is available yet, and there's a waitlist.

A 3D body scanner gives an estimated body fat. Is Soma Axon's reading an estimate too?
Yes, by Soma's own description. A 3D body scanner, the kind found in gyms, measures your shape and gives estimated fat and lean mass. Soma Axon will read body composition with a very small electrical current while you stand on its plate with your hands on the grips, and Soma's Terms say every number it shows is an estimate, shown with its uncertainty. Each value comes with its margin of error. Soma Axon isn't a medical device. The pod is still being built, and there's a waitlist.

How does Soma Axon's body composition reading compare with a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan reads body fat, visceral fat, lean mass and bone density with a very low dose of X-rays, according to Soma's guide to full-body scans. It takes about 7 to 11 minutes, and providers suggest one every 3 to 6 months. Soma Axon uses no X-rays or anything else ionizing: it reads body composition with a very small electrical current while you stand on its plate, during a weekly visit of a few minutes. It isn't a medical device. Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, is still building it and keeps a waitlist.

What do a whole-body MRI and Soma Axon each tell you?
Very different things. A whole-body MRI takes images of your organs and tissue with a magnetic field and radio waves. It runs 22 to 60 minutes, and providers suggest one a year. Soma's guide put the price at about $899 to $2,499 when it read its sources on September 26, 2026. Soma Axon isn't an MRI and doesn't image organs. It's built for a weekly visit that photographs your skin and reads heart, breathing, body composition, balance and strength, so you can see readings change week to week. Everything here is general wellness. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building Soma Axon, hasn't opened a pod yet but keeps a waitlist.

How does a 3D body scanner at the gym compare with Soma Axon?
Gym 3D scanners read your body's shape and measurements, estimated fat and lean mass and posture in under a minute, without radiation. One maker suggests a scan every 30 to 90 days, and each gym sets its own price. Soma Axon is built for a weekly visit of a few minutes, reading body composition with a very small electrical current plus heart, breathing, balance and strength. It uses no radiation either, and it isn't cleared or approved by the FDA. Soma Axon is still a prototype, with a waitlist.

A smart ring covers my nights. What would a weekly Soma Axon read add?
A ring reads a few signals all day, like pulse, sleep and steps. Soma sees it as covering your nights while the pod covers the week. Soma Axon would add a whole-body read once a week, photographing your skin and reading heart and breathing, body composition, balance and strength the same way every time. One reading alone doesn't say much, Soma notes, but weekly readings taken the same way show what's changing and how fast. Between visits, the Soma app keeps reading your phone and watch. It's a general wellness product that isn't available yet, and there's a waitlist.
