The Soma app
Can a smartwatch test grip strength and balance like Soma Axon?
The smartwatch and band Soma compared don't list a way to test grip and balance, or to measure body composition or photograph skin. Soma Axon is being built to test grip strength with a pair of grips and balance with its floor plate at every weekly visit, and the Soma app's Body view reads the trend. Soma calls strength and balance among the first things to change with age. It's general wellness information, and Soma isn't medical care.
How do a smart scale, a smart ring and a weekly pod split the job?
Soma describes each by where it lives. A smart scale lives at home, where you can step on it every morning in 30 seconds, and a ring covers your nights. Soma Axon is a place you go once a week for a whole-body read, and the Soma app reads Apple Health between visits, so what your scale and ring save there can sit next to the pod's results. Soma is meant for general wellness.

Do I own the data I put into a wellness app?
Soma's Terms say you own the data you put into Soma, from your Apple Health data to notes, mood entries and profile details. Soma gets a limited license to use it the way its Privacy Policy describes, and that license ends when the data is deleted. Soma keeps to general wellness and isn't medical care.

How can I measure my strength if my watch doesn't?
The watch and band Soma compared don't list a way to test grip. Soma Axon is being built to read strength through a pair of grips and balance through its floor plate at every weekly visit. The Soma app's Body view reads the trend across visits. Soma counts strength and balance among the first things to change with age. It's general wellness, and it's still being built, so there's a waitlist.
Can one app bring my sleep, stress and body composition together?
That's the idea behind the Soma app's three views. Its Mind view puts the day's stress peaks next to last night's sleep when you tap the score. Soma Axon reads body composition at every weekly visit, and the app's Body view turns those visits into a handful of facts. Everything fits on Today, Body and Mind. Soma isn't medical care, and for now there's only a waitlist.
How much should one wellness reading count?
Not much on its own, by Soma's reckoning. One reading doesn't tell you much, while readings taken the same way every week show what's changing and how fast. Every number Soma shows also comes with its margin of error and a note on whether its science is well established or still being tested. The room, the hour and the device can move a single reading. Soma is meant for general wellness.
From FAQ, Home and The same instrument, every week.
Why do readings stay more consistent when they're taken in the same place?
Fewer things are left to vary. A reading reflects the room, the time of day and the instrument as well as your body, so holding those steady means what changes week to week is you. Soma Axon is being built on that idea: the same light and cameras every time, the same spot to stand on and the same two grips. The Soma app then reads the trend across visits. Soma is general wellness, and it isn't available yet.

Which parts of fitness change first with age?
Soma's answer is strength, balance and how you move, which it calls the first things to change with age. Soma Axon is being built to read strength and balance at every weekly visit, and the Soma app's Body view follows the trend across visits. Soma keeps to general wellness and isn't medical care, so talk to a clinician about your health.

Who does a wellness company share my data with?
Soma's Privacy Policy lists service providers bound by contract to use it only to provide their service to Soma. They include a cloud host in the United States for accounts, raw records and derived facts, plus an email delivery provider. AI model providers only get data if you use an AI feature, and integration providers only if you connect another service. Soma is a wellness product and isn't cleared or approved by the FDA.

What rights do California residents have with a wellness app's data?
Soma's Privacy Policy spells them out under California law: you can know what personal information it has collected about you and how it's used and shared, ask for deletion subject to certain exceptions, correct information that's wrong and get a portable copy. You also have the right not to be discriminated against for using those rights. Soma says it doesn't sell or share personal information as California defines those terms. The app is part of a general wellness product.

What rights do Washington residents have over consumer health data?
Soma's Privacy Policy includes a Consumer Health Data section that serves as its Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy for Washington residents, reflecting the My Health My Data Act. It lets you confirm whether Soma processes your consumer health data, access it, get a list of the third parties and affiliates it was shared with, delete it and withdraw consent, by emailing privacy@somalabs.me. Soma has no affiliates that receive consumer health data. It's general wellness information, and Soma isn't medical care.

Can I appeal if a wellness company turns down my data request?
With Soma, yes. If it refuses a request, you can appeal by replying to its response. Soma answers appeals within 45 days and tells you how to contact your state attorney general if you're not satisfied. First requests get an answer within 45 days too, with one possible 45-day extension. Soma is meant for general wellness.
From Privacy Policy and FAQ.
Can someone else make a data request for me?
Soma accepts requests from an authorized agent acting for you, as long as the agent can show proof of that authority. Soma verifies requests, for example by confirming the email address on your account. Requests go to privacy@somalabs.me and get a response within 45 days. The app is general wellness software, and Soma isn't cleared or approved by the FDA.
From Privacy Policy and FAQ.
What does a wellness app do with my email address?
At Soma, it depends on where you gave it. A waitlist email is used for waitlist and account messages, such as an invitation or a notice about the Privacy Policy. Soma keeps it until it invites you or you ask to be removed, and never longer than 24 months after you joined. You can unsubscribe using the link in any message. Soma isn't medical care, and for now there's only a waitlist.
From Privacy Policy and FAQ.
What profile details does a wellness app really need?
For Soma, very few. The Today view needs no account at all. History sync needs an account with an email address and a way to sign in, while a name is optional and so are profile details such as birth date, sex, height and weight. If you add them, Soma uses them to personalize your account and the derived facts it computes, and keeps them while the account is open. Soma is meant for general wellness.

When will a weekly body scan open near me?
For Soma, there's no date yet. Soma Labs is building the first prototype of Soma Axon, and people on the waitlist will be the first to hear where the first pod opens. Pods are planned for Soma's own studio and for longevity clinics, gyms, workplaces and pharmacies. One account will work at every pod. Soma is a general wellness product.
How much will a weekly body scan cost?
For Soma, no price is published yet. Soma Labs says it wants weekly self-measurement at a price a person can actually pay, and it'll price Soma like the weekly habit it's meant to be. Prices come out before the first pod opens, with the waitlist hearing them first. The optional blood test will be an add-on with its own price, and the Soma app is free during the beta. Soma keeps to general wellness and isn't medical care.

Is there a weekly body scan available in the US yet?
Soma's isn't: Soma Labs is still building the first prototype of Soma Axon, and there's a waitlist. Other kinds of full-body scan are around today, from a whole-body MRI or a DEXA scan to a 3D body scanner at a gym or a clinic scan with a clinician, though they read different things and none of those is weekly. Soma's guide says it's worth asking what a scan measures before you book it. The Soma app would carry the weekly results. Soma is general wellness and still being built.
From About, FAQ and Full-body scans compared.
What wellness benefit could my company offer that people use every week?
Soma describes Soma Axon in a workplace as a benefit people use every week: the employer pays for it and never sees anyone's results. Each member keeps their own account at every pod and sees results in their own Soma app, every value with its margin of error. Their data is deleted when they ask. Soma is choosing the first places to host a pod now, and Soma is meant for general wellness.
From For organizations and FAQ.
Could a pharmacy offer a quick weekly body scan?
That's one of the places Soma plans for Soma Axon: a few minutes in the pod on the way to the counter. With an attendant on site, the pod can offer the optional finger-prick blood test, whose results reach the member's Soma app a few days later. Members own what the pod reads, and the pharmacy never sees anyone's results. Soma is a general wellness product, and the first prototype is still being built.
