What does Soma's website host handle?
Soma's Privacy Policy lists one provider for website hosting, delivery, bot protection and visit counts. It runs somalabs.me and its sign-up form, counts visits to the site and keeps standard server logs to deliver and secure it. Like Soma's other service providers, it's bound by contract to use information only to provide its service to Soma.

How does Soma's waitlist handle my email compared with a regular newsletter sign-up?
Soma's list comes with written limits. It keeps your waitlist email until it invites you or you ask to be removed, and in any case no longer than 24 months after you joined. It sends waitlist and account messages, such as an invitation or a notice about its Privacy Policy, and you can unsubscribe through the link in any of them. The list is how Soma will announce its first pod.

How does Soma's history sync compare with apps that upload everything to the cloud automatically?
Soma's history sync stays off unless you choose it. Granting Apple Health access doesn't turn it on, since the two are separate choices you can revoke. When you do switch it on, a compressed copy of your raw Apple Health record is uploaded once to servers Soma rents in the United States, and it needs an account with an email address and a way to sign in. Soma is still pre-launch.

Is a Soma account like a patient portal at a clinic?
It's a different thing. Soma is a general wellness product and isn't medical care, and using it doesn't create a clinician-patient relationship. A Soma account is what history sync needs, and it holds an email address, a way to sign in and any optional profile details you add. The app reads Apple Health only with your permission and never writes back. Nothing from Soma is available yet.

Are Soma's AI answers like advice from a clinician?
They aren't. Soma's Terms of Use call its AI features informational only: they can be wrong or incomplete, they aren't medical advice and they don't replace a clinician. Soma is a general wellness product, and using it doesn't create a clinician-patient relationship. For anything about your health, the Terms say to talk to a qualified clinician.

Can Soma read the data a smart ring saves to Apple Health, and does it add anything to it?
If the ring saves readings to Apple Health, the Soma app can read the types you allow. It never writes anything back. Soma says the ring covers your nights and Soma Axon covers the week, and that the two work together. Soma is a general wellness product and isn't a medical device, and it isn't available yet.

Does Soma replace a fitness band's app?
It doesn't. Soma says a watch or band covers the days and Soma Axon covers the week, with the Soma app reading your phone and watch between visits. The app reads only the Apple Health types you allow and never writes anything back to Apple Health. Soma is a general wellness product, and it isn't available yet.

If a pharmacy hosts Soma Axon, what would the pharmacy see about me?
A venue hosting Soma Axon, pharmacies included, sees how often the pod gets used and never anyone's results. Members own what the pod reads. With an attendant on site, a pharmacy pod can offer the optional finger-prick blood test. Your Soma account works at every pod, so your record follows you from one venue to another. Soma is a general wellness product still being built.

How does a longevity clinic hosting Soma Axon differ from the clinic's own workups when it comes to my data?
Soma describes Axon in a longevity clinic as a weekly read between the deeper workups the clinic already runs. As host, the clinic sees how often the pod gets used and never anyone's results, and members own what the pod reads. Your Soma account works at every pod, so the record follows you. Soma is a general wellness product, and Axon is still being built.

Do wellness companies sell anonymized health data?
Soma's Privacy Policy answers it for Soma: it doesn't sell what it collects. It does use de-identified or aggregated data to improve Soma, meaning data that can't reasonably be used to identify you. It also commits not to attempt to re-identify it. For now, Soma Labs (somalabs.me) runs a waitlist.

Who at a health startup can actually look at my data?
At Soma, access is limited to the few people who need it to run Soma. That's one of the safeguards its Privacy Policy lists for health data, along with encryption in transit between the app and its servers and ongoing review of its practices. At a pod, staff see an outline of your body instead of the skin photos. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building Soma Axon, makes a general wellness product that isn't available yet.

What happens to my data if a health startup shuts down its app?
Under its Terms of Use, Soma can end the beta or discontinue the services, giving notice first where it reasonably can. For your data, the usual rules still apply: you can ask for deletion at privacy@somalabs.me at any time, and the Terms keep Soma's license to backup copies only until they roll off. Soma isn't available yet, and there's a waitlist.

Can I get a copy of all my data from a wellness app?
At Soma you can ask for one. Its Privacy Policy lets you request access to your data or a copy of it by emailing privacy@somalabs.me, and California residents can receive a portable copy of their personal information. Soma verifies the request, for example by confirming the email on your account. Soma, made by Soma Labs in Palo Alto, isn't available yet.

Can I ask a company to fix wrong information it holds about me?
Soma lets you ask. Its Privacy Policy includes correction among the requests you can send to privacy@somalabs.me, along with access, a copy and deletion. California residents can also ask Soma to correct personal information that's wrong. For details you type in yourself, such as profile details or a note, the Terms of Use make getting them right your job. For now Soma has only a waitlist.
From Privacy Policy, Terms of Use and About.
Can a wellness company refuse to delete my data?
Soma's documents allow for limits and an appeal. Its Terms of Use say Soma may keep what the law requires it to keep, and its California section describes deletion as subject to certain exceptions. If Soma refuses a request, you can appeal by replying to its response. It answers appeals within 45 days. Soma can't be used yet.

Does a wellness app give Nevada residents extra protection for their health data?
Soma's Privacy Policy names Nevada law alongside Washington's My Health My Data Act and similar laws in other states as giving added protection to consumer health data. Its Consumer Health Data section says Soma has no affiliates that receive that data, doesn't sell it and doesn't use geofencing. The section lists rights such as access and deletion, exercised by emailing privacy@somalabs.me. Soma hasn't launched yet.
From Privacy Policy and About.
How can I find out which companies a wellness app shared my data with?
Soma's Privacy Policy gives two routes. Its Consumer Health Data section lists a right to receive a list of the third parties and affiliates Soma has shared your consumer health data with. California residents can also ask to know what personal information Soma has collected and how it has used and shared it. Both go through privacy@somalabs.me. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) keeps a waitlist while Soma is being built.

Are the notes and mood logs I write in a wellness app kept private?
With Soma, they stay on your phone until you turn on history sync. Once it's on, notes and mood you log are stored with your record, and the policy says they're kept with its cloud host. Soma doesn't use what it collects to advertise to you, and it limits access to the few people who need it to run Soma. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building Soma Axon, hasn't made Soma available yet.
From Privacy Policy and About.
Does a wellness app really need my height, weight and birth date?
Soma asks for them only as optional profile details. History sync, which needs an account, requires an email address and a way to sign in, and anything else, such as birth date, sex, height and weight, is your choice to add. If you add them, Soma uses these account records to set up and personalize your account and the derived facts it computes. Soma is still pre-launch.
From Privacy Policy and About.
How do I control which Apple Health data a wellness app can read?
With Soma, it reads only the data types you specifically allow, and sensitive types such as reproductive health and basal body temperature are asked for separately, only when a feature needs them. You can turn off Soma's access at any time in the iOS Settings app, under Health, then Data Access & Devices, then Soma. Soma never writes anything back to Apple Health. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) hasn't launched Soma yet.
