Your data and privacy
Can a wellness app read my Apple Health data without me knowing?
Not with Soma: it reads Apple Health only with your permission, and only the data types you specifically allow. Sensitive types, such as reproductive health and basal body temperature, are requested separately and only when a feature needs them. You can switch off Soma's access in iOS Settings, under Health, then Data Access & Devices, then Soma. It's a general wellness product, and Soma Labs (somalabs.me) hasn't released it yet.
From Privacy Policy, FAQ and About.
Can I move my data from a wellness app to another service?
Soma offers a few routes. You can ask for a copy of your data at privacy@somalabs.me, and California residents can receive a portable copy of their personal information. Soma is also designing an API so the apps you already use can read your Soma results, with your permission, which you can take back at any time. The API isn't open yet, and Soma, from Palo Alto's Soma Labs, isn't available yet either.

Can teenagers have their own account on a wellness app?
Not on Soma. It's for adults 18 and over in the United States and isn't directed to children, and its Terms of Use require users to be at least 18. If Soma learns it collected personal information from someone under 18, it'll delete it. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) hasn't launched Soma yet, and there's a waitlist.

Can a gym or pharmacy hosting a body scan pod see my blood test results?
Soma says a venue hosting Soma Axon sees how often the pod gets used and never anyone's results. The optional blood test goes to a partner lab, and its results reach your Soma app a few days later. Members own what the pod reads. Soma isn't medical care, and Axon is still a prototype.
From For organizations, FAQ and About.
What does the attendant at a body scan pod see about me?
Someone from Soma welcomes you at a Soma Axon visit and asks how you slept, when you last ate and whether you trained. Staff see an outline of your body, and Soma says they never see the photos of your skin. At host venues, Soma trains the venue's staff to run the pod and help a member through a visit, and the venue never sees anyone's results. Soma is a general wellness product still being built.
From Home, FAQ, For organizations and About.
What does a weekly body scan collect about me?
Soma Axon is being built to take skin photos and read heart and breathing, body composition, balance and grip strength, with ECG, EEG and thermal imaging sensors in the pod. A finger-prick blood test is optional. Today the pod collects nothing, and before it does, Soma will give a separate notice and ask for your explicit consent. Soma is for general wellness and isn't medical care.
From Compare, FAQ and Privacy Policy.
Do I get to see all the data a body scan collects about me?
With Soma Axon, the pod shows you one calm number on your way out, and everything else is in the Soma app, explained in plain words with the margin of error for each value. You can also ask Soma for access to your data or a copy at privacy@somalabs.me. Soma is a general wellness product and isn't medical care, and Palo Alto's Soma Labs is still building the pod.
From FAQ, Privacy Policy and About.
Will a wellness app tell me what data fed a score?
Soma is built to. Every score in the Soma app shows what moved it, with each measure set against your own usual range, and a score only sums up what was measured and what you reported, such as how you slept or whether you trained. Soma is a general wellness product, and it isn't available yet.
Could a landlord or lender use my wellness app data?
Soma's Terms of Use forbid using Soma, or anything it computes, to make a decision about someone else's employment, insurance, credit or housing. Soma also doesn't sell personal information, and outside its service providers it discloses information only when the law requires it, to protect rights and safety, with your consent or in a merger or acquisition. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) hasn't launched Soma yet.
From Terms of Use, Privacy Policy and About.
What does a wellness app's privacy policy mean by "inferences"?
In Soma's Privacy Policy, inferences are the derived facts Soma computes from your raw record, such as a biological age estimate or long-term trends. Soma uses them to show you those derived facts inside the app, shares them only with service providers and keeps them while your account is open. Soma is a general wellness product and isn't medical care, and Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, hasn't launched it yet.

Does a wellness company keep data from people who never finish signing up?
If you leave somalabs.me without signing up, the visit details in your browser's session storage are cleared when you close the tab. Sign-up attempts Soma turns away, such as automated or invalid ones, are kept for 90 days. A completed sign-up is kept until Soma invites you or you ask for removal, and no longer than 24 months. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building Soma Axon, isn't open yet.

What does "beta" mean for my data with a wellness app?
For Soma, beta means a pre-release product whose features can change, break or disappear without notice. Soma doesn't promise any feature will always be available, and access may be limited by waitlist, invitation or capacity. The Privacy Policy is part of the same agreement as the Terms of Use, and you can ask for deletion at privacy@somalabs.me at any time. Soma is free during the beta.

Do wellness apps count the notes I type as health data?
Soma does. Its Consumer Health Data section counts the notes and mood you choose to write down as consumer health data, alongside the Apple Health data you allow and the derived facts Soma computes. Its California section lists what you write down among the sources of sensitive personal information. Once history sync is on, notes are stored with your record. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) hasn't made Soma available yet.
From Privacy Policy and About.
Can a wellness company use my data to personalize what I see?
Soma's California section lists one such use: account and customer records, such as your name and profile details, are used to create and personalize your account and the derived facts Soma computes. Soma doesn't use what it collects to advertise to you, and there are no ads in Soma. Soma is a general wellness product, and Palo Alto's Soma Labs hasn't launched it yet.
From Privacy Policy, FAQ and About.
Can I find out which service providers a wellness company uses?
Soma's Privacy Policy already lists them by role: cloud hosting and storage in the United States, website hosting and delivery with bot protection and visit counts, a website database for the blog and waitlist, email delivery, AI model providers when you use an AI feature and integration providers when you connect a service. Its Consumer Health Data section also lets you ask for a list of the third parties and affiliates it shared your consumer health data with. Soma isn't open to the public yet.
From Privacy Policy and About.
Can I bring my existing body data into a new wellness app?
Soma is built to read what's already in Apple Health, with your permission and limited to the types you allow. You can also connect another service, such as a wearable maker's account. Soma then receives the data you authorize from it. If you turn on history sync, a compressed copy of your raw Apple Health record is uploaded once. Soma is meant for general wellness, and Soma Labs (somalabs.me) hasn't launched it yet.
From Privacy Policy, FAQ and About.
Where can I read a wellness company's commitments about my data before signing up?
Soma puts them in three places. Its home page promises that your data stays yours and that Soma doesn't sell it or use it for ads. It adds that deletion clears the pod, the app and Soma's systems within 30 days and backups within 90. Its FAQ says you can ask for deletion at any time. Its Privacy Policy covers the website, the waitlist, the app and related services in detail. For now Soma has only a waitlist.
From Home, FAQ, Privacy Policy and About.
Is the Soma app ad-free during the beta too?
Yes. Soma's Privacy Policy says there are no ads in Soma. Soma is free during the beta, and if it adds a paid feature later, its Terms say you'll see the price and be asked to agree before any charge. The app is pre-release, and access may come by waitlist or invitation.
From Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
Does Soma make money from my data?
Soma's policy is plain on this: it doesn't sell what it collects, and it doesn't use it to advertise to you. There are no ads in Soma. It also doesn't give health data to data brokers. Soma is free during the beta. Any paid feature added later would show its price and ask for your agreement first.
From Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
What happens to my data in Soma's backups while deletion is pending?
Backup copies roll off within 90 days of your deletion request, after the data leaves Soma's live systems within 30 days. Soma's Terms of Use keep its license to those backup copies only until they roll off, and Soma may keep what the law requires it to keep. The Privacy Policy lists the same 30 and 90 day timeline.
