What does a yearly check-up give me that a weekly body scan doesn't?

Soma Labs (somalabs.me) calls a yearly check-up thorough, and it doesn't see its weekly pod replacing a thorough check-up. Soma tells people to keep seeing their doctor and keep their check-ups. Its pod, Soma Axon, is a general wellness product that adds a weekly reading in the months between.

Which full-body scans take the least time?

By the numbers in Soma's guide, a whole-body MRI takes 22 to 60 minutes and a DEXA scan about 7 to 11 minutes. A 3D body scan takes under a minute, and a smart scale reading 30 seconds. Soma Axon, which Palo Alto-based Soma Labs is building as a general wellness product, is listed at a few minutes, once a week.

What do different full-body scans cost?

Soma's comparison, with sources read on September 26, 2026, lists a whole-body MRI at about $899 to $2,499 and a DEXA scan at about $40 to $185. A 3D body scan's price is set by each gym. Soma Axon's price isn't announced, and Soma says it'll be priced like a weekly habit. The pod is a general wellness product still being built.

Could a DEXA scan fit into a weekly routine like a body pod?

They're built around different schedules. Soma's guide says DEXA providers suggest a scan every 3 to 6 months, and DEXA is the one kind it compares that uses X-rays, at a very low dose. Soma Axon is built for a weekly visit, so you can see how readings change from one week to the next. It's meant for general wellness.

Should I use a watch or a weekly pod to follow day-to-day trends?

For day-to-day trends, Soma's blog credits the watch. It says watches have one big advantage: they're worn all day, so they can follow trends in heart rate and sleep between check-ups. Soma's line is that the watch covers the days and Soma Axon covers the week. The pod counts as general wellness and is still being built.

How does a whole-body MRI compare with a weekly pod for keeping a record over time?

Mostly in how often they happen. Soma's guide says whole-body MRI providers suggest a scan once a year, while Soma Axon is built for a weekly visit, which adds up to 52 whole-body reads a year. An MRI takes images of your organs and tissue, and Soma Axon doesn't. It's a general wellness product that reads you with cameras, light and sensors you touch.

Is a smart scale reading the same as a body pod reading?

The basic method for body composition is the same. Soma Axon will read it with a very small electrical current while you stand on its plate with your hands on its grips, like a smart scale. The difference Soma draws is the setting: a closed cabin with the same light and camera angles every week, instead of a scale at home you can step on every morning. Soma Axon counts as general wellness.

What does a weekly pod add to a watch or a ring?

Soma Labs, which is based in Palo Alto, frames them as different jobs. A ring or a watch reads a few signals all day, like pulse, sleep and steps. Soma Axon is for slower changes, like your skin, your body composition and your strength, measured the same way every week. The Soma app reads your phone and watch between visits, and the pod is a general wellness product.

How does a yearly check-up compare with a weekly scan for strength and balance?

Once a week, Soma Axon reads strength, balance and how you move, which Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, calls the first things to change with age. A check-up reads you once a year. Soma still tells people to keep their check-ups, and the pod is a general wellness product.

How do a DEXA scan, a smart scale and a weekly pod differ for body fat?

They get at it differently. Soma's guide says a DEXA scan reads body fat, visceral fat, lean mass and bone density, while a smart scale estimates body composition with a very small electrical current. Soma Axon will read body composition the same basic way as a smart scale, on its floor plate and grips, once a week. It's a wellness product and isn't medical care.

Your data and privacy

Does Soma sell my data or use it for ads?

No. Soma Labs promises that your data stays yours, and its Privacy Policy says it doesn't sell what it collects or use it to advertise to you. There are no ads in Soma. The policy also rules out sharing personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising and giving health data to data brokers.

From Home and Privacy Policy.

Do wellness apps sell your health data?

It varies by company. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building Soma Axon, puts its answer in writing: it doesn't sell personal information, doesn't give health data to data brokers and doesn't use Apple Health data for advertising or marketing. Its policy adds that it hasn't sold or shared personal information, as California law defines those terms, in the past 12 months. Soma isn't available yet, and there's a waitlist.

From About and Privacy Policy.

Does Soma use geofencing, or pass health data to affiliate companies?

Neither, according to the consumer health data section of Soma's Privacy Policy. Soma says it has no affiliates that receive consumer health data, it doesn't sell consumer health data and it doesn't use geofencing. That category covers the Apple Health data you allow, the notes and mood you write down and the derived facts Soma computes. It's shared with service providers bound by contract to use it only for their service to Soma.

From Privacy Policy.

What does a Global Privacy Control signal do on Soma's website?

Nothing changes when your browser sends one, because there's nothing to opt out of. Soma's Privacy Policy says it doesn't sell or share personal information as California law defines those terms. Even so, Soma counts a Global Privacy Control signal as a valid request.

From Privacy Policy.

What does Soma mean by "your data stays yours"?

It's a promise with a few parts. Soma says it doesn't sell your data or use it for ads. Its Terms of Use say you own what you put in, from Apple Health data to notes, mood entries and profile details. Soma gets only a limited license to use it the way the Privacy Policy describes. For Soma Axon, members own what the pod reads. Soma is a general wellness product and isn't medical care.

From Home, Terms of Use, For organizations and FAQ.

What does Soma do with my Apple Health data?

With your permission, it reads only the Apple Health types you allow. It uses that data for the Today view, for history sync if you turn it on and for any AI feature you choose to use. Soma never writes anything back to Apple Health and doesn't store your Apple Health data in iCloud. It doesn't use it for advertising or marketing. Soma is a general wellness product, and it isn't medical care.

From Privacy Policy and FAQ.

How do I delete my Soma data?

Ask at any time. Soma says you can request deletion from the pod and the app, and to delete everything you email privacy@somalabs.me. Your data is then removed from Soma's live systems within 30 days and rolls off its backups within 90 days. The pod, Soma Axon, is still a prototype being built.

From FAQ, Privacy Policy and About.

Does Soma keep anything after I ask it to delete my data?

After a deletion request, your data comes out of Soma's live systems within 30 days, and backup copies roll off within 90 days. Soma's Terms of Use add two points: Soma may keep what the law requires it to keep, and the license you gave it to use your data ends once the data is deleted.
