Your data and privacy
How do I know a wellness company won't quietly start collecting new kinds of data?
Soma's Privacy Policy makes three commitments that bear on this. Before its pod or camera-based pulse measurement collects anything, Soma will give a separate notice and ask for your explicit consent. A material change to the policy is announced in the app or by email before it takes effect. And health data it already collected won't be used in a materially different way without your consent. Soma isn't open yet.

Does Soma use my data to market its own products?
Soma rules out marketing with your Apple Health data: its Privacy Policy says that data isn't used for advertising or marketing, and Soma doesn't use what it collects to advertise to you. The messages it sends are waitlist and account messages, such as an invitation or a notice about the policy, and you can unsubscribe from waitlist emails through the link in any message. There are no ads in Soma.
From Privacy Policy.
Does Soma send a newsletter?
Soma's newsletter page doubles as its waitlist: it takes an email address to tell you when the first pod opens and when the app is ready. The Privacy Policy describes the emails Soma sends as waitlist and account messages, such as an invitation or a notice about the policy. Every waitlist email carries a link to unsubscribe. Soma Axon is still being built.

Can I follow Soma's progress without giving it any personal data?
You can read Soma's blog, where the team writes about building Soma Axon as it happens, without signing up for anything. The site sets no advertising or analytics cookies and loads no third-party trackers, and its visit counter only gives Soma totals. Standard server logs are kept typically for 30 days or less. Joining the waitlist only matters if you want to hear first where the first pod opens.
From Know thyself, Privacy Policy and FAQ.
Is Soma a data broker?
It isn't. Soma's Privacy Policy says it doesn't give health data to data brokers and doesn't sell your personal information. Soma Labs Inc. operates Soma as a wellness app built around Apple Health, and it shares information with service providers bound by contract to use it only for their service to Soma. Soma is still pre-launch, and its first pod is a prototype.

Would researchers working with Soma see my name?
Soma's research model keeps member data de-identified inside a secure enclave, and the research team's analysis runs there too, so nothing leaves. Studies run only with members who opt in to that study, and using the app doesn't enroll you in one. Separately, Soma commits not to attempt to re-identify de-identified or aggregated data. Soma can't be used yet.

Does Soma Axon keep my data on the pod itself?
Soma's deletion promise covers the pod, the app and its systems: once you ask, your data is gone from all three within 30 days, and from backups within 90. You'll be able to ask for deletion from the pod or the app at any time. Today the pod collects nothing, and Soma will give a separate notice before it does. Soma is a general wellness product.

Does Soma's Today view use my notes?
Soma's Consumer Health Data section says it uses consumer health data, which includes the notes and mood you choose to write down, to provide the Today view, history sync and any AI feature you choose to use. The Today view is computed on your phone and works offline, and nothing you see there goes to Soma. Soma is a general wellness product and isn't available yet.
From Privacy Policy, FAQ and About.
Does Soma process my data on my phone or on its servers?
Both, depending on what you turn on. The Today view is computed on your phone and works offline. If you turn on history sync, Soma's server-side engines turn your synced raw record into a small number of derived facts, such as a biological age estimate and long-term trends, on servers it rents in the United States. Soma is a general wellness product and hasn't launched yet.

Can I test Soma's security myself?
Not without Soma's permission. Its Terms of Use rule out testing Soma's security unless Soma has agreed, and they ask anyone who finds a vulnerability to report it to privacy@somalabs.me, where Soma says it'll work with you. The Terms also bar interfering with or disrupting Soma or the servers and networks that run it.
From Terms of Use.
Who's responsible for Soma's handling of my data, Soma or Apple?
Soma. Its Terms of Use say that if you got Soma through the App Store, the Terms are between you and Soma. Apple isn't a party to them. The Terms name Soma Labs Inc. as responsible for any claim relating to Soma, including consumer protection claims. Soma reads Apple Health data through HealthKit, and its own Privacy Policy covers what it does with that data.

Does Soma's Privacy Policy apply to people outside the United States?
Soma offers its services only in the United States, to adults 18 and over who are located there, and it stores and processes data in the United States. Its Privacy Policy covers the website at somalabs.me, the waitlist, the app and related services. Soma isn't available yet.
From Terms of Use, Privacy Policy and About.
Can Soma read my data from other apps on my phone?
Only through Apple Health, and only the data types you specifically allow. Soma reads Apple Health with your permission and never writes anything back to it. If you connect another service, such as a wearable maker's account, Soma receives the data you authorize from that service. Soma's Privacy Policy doesn't describe any other way it reads your phone's data. Soma hasn't launched yet.
From Privacy Policy and About.
What does Soma promise about my data on its home page?
It's one of the six promises Soma lists behind every number, in the pod and in the app. Your data stays yours, Soma says: it doesn't sell it or use it for ads. Ask Soma to delete it, and it's gone from the pod, the app and Soma's systems within 30 days. Backups follow within 90. Soma is a general wellness product still being built.
Is the company behind the Soma app the same one that holds my data?
Yes. Soma Labs Inc. operates Soma, and its Privacy Policy covers the website, the waitlist, the Soma app and related services. The names Soma, Prism and Soma Axon belong to Soma Labs Inc., which is based in Palo Alto, California. It stores and processes data in the United States with service providers bound by contract, such as its cloud host.

How does the data from a 3D body scan every month or two compare with a weekly Soma visit?
Soma's guide says a 3D body scan takes under a minute and one maker suggests one every 30 to 90 days, with the price set by each gym. It reads body shape and measurements, estimated fat and lean mass and posture. Soma Axon is built for a weekly visit, so you can see how readings change from one week to the next. Members own what the pod reads. Soma is a general wellness product still being built.
From Full-body scans compared, For organizations, FAQ and About.
How does Soma's weekly data compare with DEXA scans every few months?
Soma's guide says DEXA providers suggest a scan every 3 to 6 months, and each takes about 7 to 11 minutes with a very low dose of X-rays. A DEXA scan reads body fat, visceral fat, lean mass and bone density. Soma Axon is built for a weekly visit with no X-rays, reading body composition with a very small electrical current. Members own what the pod reads. Soma is a general wellness product.

How is Soma's planned API different from giving an app my Apple Health access?
One is about what Soma reads, the other about what apps read from Soma. When you give Soma Apple Health access, the Soma app reads the types you allow and never writes back. Soma's planned API works the other way around: apps you already use could read your Soma results, and you'd choose what each app can read and take that access back at any time. The API isn't open yet. Soma is a general wellness product.

Does a wellness company learn my name when I join its waitlist?
Soma's waitlist doesn't ask for it. A sign-up collects your email address plus technical details such as your IP address, approximate location, browser, device, language and time zone and the pages and links that led you there. The partner and developer form is the one that asks for a name. Soma Labs, the Palo Alto company building Soma Axon, keeps the waitlist while Soma is pre-launch.
From Privacy Policy and About.
Does a wellness company know my name if I only use its app?
Soma doesn't learn it at first. Before you turn anything on, the app has no account and works entirely on your phone. History sync is what needs an account, and even then a name is optional: the account needs an email address and a way to sign in. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) hasn't launched Soma yet.
