Medical care and the FDA
Can I keep using Soma if I move out of the United States?
Soma's Terms of Use require you to be located in the United States, and Soma offers its services only there today. If Soma has reason to believe you no longer meet the requirements to use it, it may suspend or close your account. You can also close it yourself at any time.

Is Sign in with Apple required for Soma?
Soma's Terms of Use only say sign-in may be offered through Sign in with Apple. What an account does need is an email address, and a name is optional. The app's Today view doesn't need an account at all, while history sync does.

Who should I talk to about my health if I use a wellness pod?
A qualified clinician. That's what Soma's Terms of Use say for its weekly pod and its app. Soma's FAQ adds that you should keep seeing your doctor and keep your check-ups. It's general wellness, and Soma says plainly that it isn't medical care.

What's a wellness body scan good for, if not medical care?
Seeing how your body changes. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) builds its weekly pod, Soma Axon, for the trend: the same readings, taken the same way every week, which add up to 52 whole-body reads a year. One reading on its own doesn't tell you much, while weekly readings show what's changing and how fast. It's general wellness, and no one can try it yet.
Will a wellness pod explain what my numbers mean?
Soma's is meant to. Beyond the one calm number the pod shows on your way out, everything is in the Soma app, explained in plain words with the margin of error for each value. You'll also see whether the science behind a number is well established or still being tested. Soma Axon is a general wellness product.
What should I know before using a body scan that isn't FDA cleared?
Start with how the maker describes it. Soma, for instance, calls itself a general wellness product that isn't cleared or approved by the FDA, and its Terms say its estimates come from wellness signals and can be wrong. They also say not to start, stop or change any medication or treatment because of something Soma shows you. If you're unsure the pod suits you, ask your doctor before a first visit.

What does a wellness pod do when a sensor can't get a clean reading?
Soma leaves that spot empty. If something wasn't measured, or a sensor couldn't get a clean reading, you won't see a zero or a best guess in its place. It's one of six promises Soma makes about every number it shows, in the pod and in the app. Soma Axon is a general wellness product still being built.
Is once a week too often for a body scan?
Soma Axon is designed around once a week. It uses no X-rays, no CT and nothing else ionizing. A visit takes a few minutes. Soma's reasoning is that one reading on its own doesn't tell you much, while readings taken the same way every week show what's changing and how fast. The pod is a general wellness product and isn't available yet.
What questions does a wellness body scan ask before it reads me?
At Soma Axon, three simple ones. Someone from Soma Labs, based in Palo Alto, asks how you slept, when you last ate and whether you trained, so a short night or a hard session gets noted next to the numbers. A Soma score only sums up what was measured and what you told Soma. The pod is a general wellness product.

Can a body scan fit into a weekly routine?
That's the idea behind Soma Axon. Palo Alto-based Soma Labs says Soma is meant to be a weekly habit, and a visit is in and out in the time it takes to get a coffee. Between visits, the app reads your phone and watch. It's a general wellness product, and the first pod isn't open yet.
How can I keep a record of how my body changes over a year?
A weekly measurement taken the same way each time is one route, and it's what Soma Labs, a Palo Alto company, is building Soma Axon for. Weekly visits add up to 52 whole-body reads a year, and after a handful of visits, Soma will have a baseline built from your own readings. The pod is a general wellness product, and it isn't available yet.

Can a wellness scan tell me how sure it is about a number?
Soma's does. Every number it shows comes with its margin of error, and you'll see whether the science behind each one is well established or still being tested, so you know how much weight to give it. Soma says being honest about what a number can't tell you is part of knowing yourself. Soma puts it under general wellness.
From Home, Know thyself and FAQ.
Why would a body scan use the same instrument every time?
So a change means something. Soma Axon's pod, lighting and camera angles don't change between visits, so the thing that changes week to week is you. If your resting pulse is higher than last week, Soma wants to be able to say the change came from you and rule out the room or the equipment. The pod isn't medical care.
From Home, The same instrument, every week and FAQ.
What does Soma mean when it calls itself a general wellness product?
Soma's FAQ starts with the label itself, that Soma's category is general wellness. Then it lists what Soma isn't: medical care, a medical device or something cleared or approved by the FDA. It isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. What Soma Axon is for is seeing how your readings change from week to week.
From Home, FAQ and Full-body scans compared.
Where does Soma say it isn't medical care?
In several places. Soma's FAQ says it's a general wellness product and isn't medical care, and the Terms of Use repeat it in their own section. The comparison table lists Soma Axon as general wellness, and the home page says Soma is built for wellness.
From FAQ, Terms of Use, Compare and Home.
Are Soma's scores medical scores?
No. A Soma score only sums up what was measured and what you reported, like how you slept or whether you trained. Tapping it shows what moved it, each measure against your own usual range. Every number is an estimate shown with its uncertainty, and Soma is a general wellness product that isn't medical care.
From Home, Terms of Use and FAQ.
Is Soma's Mind score a clinical test?
It isn't. The Mind score in the Soma app is one score for your nervous system, read from your HRV, resting heart rate and breathing against your own usual range, and it shows what moved it. Soma's estimates come from wellness signals instead of clinical tests. Soma isn't medical care.
From Home, Terms of Use and FAQ.
Can I show my doctor the skin photos Soma Axon takes?
That's one use for them. Soma Axon photographs your skin at every visit, from the same positions and under the same light, so you build up dated photos to look back on and to show a clinician if you choose. Soma won't tell you whether a mole is harmful. It's a general wellness product, and the pod is still being built.
Are the ECG, EEG and thermal sensors in Soma Axon medical devices?
Soma Axon as a whole isn't a medical device. ECG, EEG and thermal imaging are among the sensors in its closed pod, alongside cameras, body composition and grip. Soma Labs (somalabs.me) says the pod isn't cleared or approved by the FDA, and it describes Soma as a general wellness product.
How do a yearly check-up and a weekly scan differ for slow changes?
Soma's view is that a yearly check-up is thorough but leaves a long gap, and a slow change can go unnoticed for most of the year. Weekly readings taken the same way are meant to show what's changing and how fast. Soma still tells people to keep their check-ups, and its pod, Soma Axon, is a general wellness product.
